Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This hydrangea performs best in six to eight hours of direct morning sun. In hotter climates, provide afternoon shade to prevent the white blooms from browning or wilting prematurely.
  • Soil: Aim for moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay, mix in compost or plant in a slight mound to improve drainage and prevent the roots from sitting in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide one inch of water per week to help the root system expand. Once established, this hydrangea is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during heat waves will cause the large flower panicles to droop or result in smaller blooms the following year.

Pruning Tips

Candelabra blooms on new wood, so you should prune it in late winter or very early spring before new growth appears. Cut the stems back by about one-third to a half of their height to encourage sturdy new stems that can support the heavy flower heads. This process is like a structural tune-up that prevents the plant from becoming floppy or thin over time.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the first leaves begin to emerge. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers after mid-summer because they stimulate soft, leafy growth that won't harden off properly before the first frost.

Enjoy the finer things in life and let the Candelabra® Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Hpopr013') light up your landscape! Tall and elegant spires of greenish-white cone-shaped flowers appear at the tops of every branch of this mid-sized ornamental flowering shrub!

Each spire is full of tiers of tiny greenish-white buds that are accented by reddish stems. As summer progresses the buds open to white blossoms and slowly transform into bright red blooms as fall approaches! Offset by a dense, upright clump of bright green leaves, the blooms fade to tan in time for winter interest, or bring your garden treasures indoors to create crafts and dried bouquets!

Candelabra® is a sturdy landscape backbone with blossoms that are sure to take center stage! Cold hardy and amazingly consistent bloomers every year, you and your pollinators will appreciate the pointed terminal buds adorning the tips of every branch on your shrub!

Planting and Application:

Candelabra® are back of the border sculptural accents! Not ones to shrink into the background, they highlight everything planted before them while standing out in high style themselves! Use rows for hedges and screening, while providing shelter and nesting for birds and wildlife. Plant groupings of these shrubs for privacy and naturalized accents!

Use a single planting to accent the end of a long planting and anchor other plants. Or a single specimen at the corner of your home or garage to add a dreamy cottage feel. These deciduous shrubs help cancel noise, soften hardscapes, and give any area a cozy, informal feel. One amazing thing about Hydrangeas is they all look lovely together, so plant a row of mixed Panicle Hydrangeas to extend your bloom time and have a variety of flower forms!

  • Tall Spires of White Blossoms Transition to Red
  • Bright Green Leaves & Sturdy Red Stems
  • Cutting Gardens, Hedges, Privacy & Specimen
  • Great Dried Décor & Crafts
  • Very Easy Care

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hydrangea bushes perform best in full sun, but can handle some part shade, especially when planted in hot climates. There they appreciate afternoon shade. Requires consistently moist, well-drained soil and a thick layer of mulch for moisture retention and insulation.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Enriched, Well-Drained Moist Soil
  • Thick Layer of Mulch
  • Prune in Early Spring
  • Cold Hardy & Low Maintenance
