Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Bella Sol™ thrives in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct light daily to ensure maximum flower production and the best color intensity. While it handles a touch of afternoon shade, anything less than four hours of sun will result in noticeably fewer, less vibrant blooms.
  • Soil: This shrub is tough and adaptable, but it loves well-drained, average soil; choose a location where water does not pool after a heavy rain. If you are dealing with heavy clay, amend the planting area generously with compost or shredded pine bark to improve aeration and drainage.

Watering Requirements

For the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist by watering deeply once or twice a week to establish a strong root system. Once mature, Potentilla is quite drought-tolerant, only needing supplemental water during prolonged heat and dry spells. Inconsistent watering will quickly cause the foliage to wilt and the blooms to become noticeably smaller, stressing the plant rather than killing it.

Pruning Tips

Bella Sol™ Potentilla blooms on new wood, making late winter or early spring the ideal time to prune before fresh growth begins. The most effective technique is renewal pruning, where you remove up to one-third of the oldest, thickest stems right down to the ground. This rejuvenation encourages better air circulation, maintains a dense shape, and results in a higher output of summer flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

A single, light application of a slow-release, balanced granular fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 mix, is sufficient in early spring to give the plant a gentle boost for the season. What you want to avoid is applying high nitrogen fertilizer late in the summer. This late feeding encourages soft, vulnerable new growth that will not have enough time to mature and harden off before the first frost, leading to winter dieback.

For a pretty "pop" of vivid color and months of blooms, add this Bloomin' Easy® selection to your landscape and feel like you've been whisked away to somewhere tropical! Use Bella So™ (Potentilla fruticosa 'Hachdon') to bring a happy, sunny look to your space!

This durable cutie is compact, but it certainly adds a lot of visual punch. There is always something going on, new buds are starting to form, and orange flowers are opening to dazzle you! You'll enjoy a lavish display for many months each year. Rugged Bush Cinquefoil is beloved by butterflies and hummingbirds for its extended season of blooms.

This special plant is pretty magical! The color saturation will change appearance in a different light, and even as the temperatures go up and down. One thing is for sure: Bella Sol™ Potentilla will keep your interest! Never flat, never static, never boring! Like Sophia Loren in Suddenly Last Summer.

Even the well-appointed, dark green foliage is beautiful. Finely dissected, airy, and feathery, it makes a wonderful counterpoint to the boldly colored, single blooms. Life is easy with this easy-breezy member of the Rose family. It looks so sweet, it's hard to remember just how cold-hardy they really are. Bella Sol Potentilla is a dream to grow for busy gardeners or beginners, even if this is your first "grown-up" shrub.

Planting and Application:

Add Bella Sol™ Potentilla in all your sun-soaked spots for an effortlessly coordinated designer style. Ideal for full sun borders, edging, and facer shrubs throughout your garden beds and borders! Rugged enough for Rock Gardens, but citrusy and colorful enough to add to the party around the pool, the glowing orange and yellow blooms light up the firepit and summer seating areas in the sun!

Try Bella Sol™ as a perfect "Thriller" in hardy containers and might turn your ho-hum modern balcony into a sun-drenched Italian villa! Add several pots in a grouping, elevating them at different heights to amplify their impact. Use terra-cotta style, lightweight pots to set the stage.

Mix and match with any extended bloom shrub or perennial from our extensive online catalog to create a lavish presentation. Pair Bella Sol™ Potentilla with our collection of Sunsparkler Sedum, airy Russian Sage, or rustic Coneflowers for an exciting look that requires ten minutes of work each year. Rework your foundation planting and showcase their illuminating la bella vita!

Waterwise Potentillas become a staple in xeriscapes and easy garden designs. Everyone has one of those spots in the garden that is hot and dry, and nothing seems to do very well. That is where Potentilla comes into play. Potentilla becomes the workhorse of your landscape. Great for xeric-scaping and fire-wise landscapes alike!

Work this petite, well-branched shrub into the front of mixed garden beds or Cutting Gardens and provide essential pollen and nectar sources for Pollinators. Use the blooms and a spray or two of foliage on your nightstand for a good morning and do not worry you're depriving your bees and butterflies of any meals!

  • Carefree Flower Power From Early Spring Through Fall
  • Attractive Mound of Ferny, Finely Cut Foliage
  • Compact Globe Looks Tight and Trim
  • Fetching "Thriller" in Containers Makes Charming Display
  • Great for Butterflies & Essential Pollinators
  • Excellent Fit in Courtyards and Small Space Gardens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Provide this sun-loving shrub with at least six hours of sunshine a day. They'll perform best in well-drained soil that sheds water quickly after a rainfall. Once their roots are established in your soil, they'll even become drought-tolerant and waterwise. Ensure your container has plenty of drainage holes if they'll be kept in containers. A touch of fertilizer and a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around the plant's roots will give them insulation and support.

For the first season in the ground, give consistent water. Container plants need a regular schedule of water on a consistent basis. Add a three-inch layer of mulch to reduce surface evaporation. It will slowly improve your soil over time, but be sure it doesn't directly touch the stems. If you need to shape them, do very light pruning in the late winter or very early spring. Rejuvenate them by removing the thickest, oldest stems out to the ground every few years.
