Where to Plant

Sunlight: Full sun is essential for this tree to thrive. Ensure it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its signature glowing orange and yellow foliage; in shaded areas, the leaves will likely fade to a duller green.
Soil: It prefers well drained soil and is quite adaptable, but it dislikes "wet feet" or standing water. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost at planting time to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Amber Jubilee Ninebark tree deeply two or three times a week to help the root system expand. Once it is fully established, this tree is remarkably drought tolerant, though a lack of consistent moisture during extreme heat can lead to smaller leaf size and less vibrant color. Think of deep watering as an investment in the plant's structural strength and leaf density.

Pruning Tips

Since this variety blooms on "old wood," you should wait to prune until immediately after the white flowers fade in late spring. Use a "haircut" approach to maintain the rounded canopy of the tree form, removing any stray branches that disrupt the shape. First Editions® Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark- Tree Form (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Jefam' PP 23,177) is a relative newcomer in the ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) family. Are you familiar with the ninebark family? If not, let Nature Hills introduce you to this great group of shrubs. Few shrubs are easier to grow than Ninebark.

This North American native can handle just about anything you can throw at it. Unless you're planting in beach sand, it will grow in your soil. It can handle droughts and torrential rains, even wet feet by a stream. Animal pests? They turn up their noses and walk away. Talk about easy to grow!

Nature Hills has trained this shrub into a single stem small tree form version of Amber Jubilee Ninebark, Physocarpus opulifolius 'Jefam'. This great little tree is a veritable rainbow of colors all year round. In spring and summer, the leaves are shades of orange, yellow, gold and sweet little spirea-like flowers come on in clusters. In the fall, the leaves transform to red and purple. In winter, though, is when this tree really shines.

As the tree ages, the bark begins to peel back and reveal beautiful strips in tones of reds, tans, browns, greens, and grays. This is why these shrubs are called 'ninebark', because of the amazing shades found on the trunks in the winter when the leaves have fallen.

Amber Jubilee Ninebark tree was bred in Canada and named for Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. (She even planted a few herself!) If these are good enough for Her Majesty, you certainly need some in your yard!
