  • Sunlight: Give this perennial at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight to maintain its sturdy, upright form. While it can handle light afternoon shade in very hot climates, full sun ensures the richest golden bronze color and prevents the flower spikes from leaning.
  • Soil: It thrives in lean, well drained soil that is alkaline to neutral. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised bed or incorporate fine gravel to improve drainage, as "wet feet" during the winter will cause the crown to rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to help the taproot reach deep into the soil. Once established, this plant is highly drought tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Avoid overhead irrigation because trapped moisture in the fuzzy leaf rosette can lead to fungal issues or crown rot.

Verbascum Honey Dijon blooms on new wood produced during the current growing season. Remove spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of blooms and to prevent the plant from putting all its energy into seed production. Abundant, early Spring flowers top the dwarf reblooming perennial, Honey Dijon Verbascum (Verbascum ‘Honey Dijon’). Also known as Honey Dijon "Mullein," large, peach and gold colored blooms, with plum eyes, cover numerous spikes protruding above the compact, yet lovely, green foliage.

Reaching a height of just 15 inches, the Sugar Plum packs a big punch in a small package. The peach and gold shaded flowers emerge early in the season, and while each individual flower does not last a long time, the numerous flowers it produces continue its fresh bloom appearance over a long period.
