Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for four to six hours of direct morning sun; this is the sweet spot. While it tolerates partial shade, afternoon sun in hotter climates will scorch the leaves and bleach the vibrant bloom color, so plant it where it gets protection from the harsh western sun.
  • Soil: This Hydrangea loves rich, well-draining soil that holds consistent moisture. Amend heavy clay soil with plenty of well-aged compost to improve drainage and loosen the structure; for very sandy spots, the organic matter will help the soil retain water.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water deeply two to three times per week to ensure a robust root system takes hold. Once established, water whenever the top two inches of soil feel dry to the touch; this plant is not highly drought tolerant and will quickly wilt under stress. Inconsistent or insufficient watering will absolutely result in smaller bloom clusters and fewer repeat flowers during the summer months.

Pruning Tips

'Summer Crush' is a rebloomer, meaning it flowers on both old wood and new wood, making it very forgiving of cold snaps. The best time for pruning is in late winter or early spring before the new leaves emerge. Simply remove any dead, spindly, or damaged stems right down to the ground; this light cleanup directs the plant's energy into the strongest stems and improves air circulation, ensuring maximum bloom power throughout the season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like a 10-10-10 formulation) once in early spring as the new buds begin to swell. For an added boost, you can follow up with a light, second feeding in early summer. A key tip is to avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers entirely after July, because this encourages tender, leafy growth instead of hardening off the stems for winter, which leaves the plant vulnerable to early frost damage.

How to Use Endless Summer® Summer Crush® Hydrangea in the Landscape

What a wonderful "Thriller" for containers! Style them any way you'd like. Go for a bold glazed blue or keep the focus on the blooms, with a dark gray or brown pot. These beautiful plants can handle a "lot of looks", so don't fret over the decision.

If you use a resin pot, it's easier to move them around your landscape wherever you might need a pop of seasonal color. Or, splash out on cast concrete containers for a permanent display on either side of your front door or along your pool deck.

These small plants would look amazing lining a walkway on the east side of your house as a very cheery low hedge. Plant them 12 inches apart for a solid screen. Include them as edging plants in modern foundation plantings.

You can also repeat them along the edge of your borders for a charming look. Why not plant some in the ground, and use a few in containers in your border? You'll love the look of a mixed planting!

Hint, hint - these are perhaps the best Mother's Day present you could possibly give. Try them as a thoughtful "thinking of you" present for anyone.

They even make wonderful sympathy gifts. Tell your loved one to use them as container plants on their porch. Keep them watered, and they'll be just fine for the season in their nursery pot. Endless Summer® Hydrangeas are very easy to care for.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Summer Crush® grows beautifully in full sun or part sun, in well-drained soil. Give your plants a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Be sure to check your container plants using the Finger Test.

Poke your finger down into the soil to the depth of your second knuckle. Is it moist? Skip watering that day. Is it getting dry? It's time to get the hose out or set up an automatic drip watering to keep your life easy!

Provide a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer, as neutral soil will produce the characteristic raspberry red color. In acid soils, you'll enjoy purple-toned blooms.

Endless Summer® Hydrangeas are remontant and bloom on both old wood and new wood. You'll love having lavish blooms all growing season long. First, the blooms appear in late spring on last year's growth. Then, you'll see an additional flush of blooms from new growth from the base.

Only prune if necessary, right after the bloom is past. This cute plant is so compact and tidy, you may not need to prune at all! Why not just take a few of the large ball-shaped blooms for cut flower arrangements throughout the season?

Summer Crush is proven to be Zone 4 cold hardy. It may die back over the winter that far north, but will come back from the roots. In the extreme cold zones, provide a layer of mulch over the plant in late fall. Or, plant yours in a container, and move it into your garage for winter.

Whatever you do with this Endless Summer® Summer Crush®, we know you'll have a good time with it. With fantastic blooms like this, how can you help but smile?

Life is short. Order plenty of colorful cuties today!
