Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 6 - 9
Don' fight the blues…embrace them! With the help of the First Editions® Delta Blues™ Chaste Tree PP#25,914 (Vitex agnus-castus 'PIIVAC-1') and its fine-textured pointed leaves and fragrant clusters of dark bluish-purple flower spires! You'll rarely see this shrub not in bloom throughout the growing season! Even the leaves are aromatic!
The tiny fragrant flowers are clustered along each long, slender terminal flower spike and last for a very long time from spring to summer! In some climates, Chastetrees will rebloom in the fall! The blooms are very long-lasting and are incredibly pollinator and Hummingbird-friendly! With Delta Blues™, you and your butterflies will relish in flower power from June until frost!
This First Editions® Chaste Tree is the first intermediate Vitex available. That means finer textured, more delicate foliage and a more compact, smaller canopy and fast growth! Heat and cold-hardy throughout USDA plant hardiness zones 6 to 9, there are few pests, diseases, or deer that bother with this plant!
Planting and Application:
Chaste Trees can typically be larger plants, but this mid-sized Chaste grows into an 8-10 foot tall and wide rounded form! This new Vitex is still just as long-flowering and alluring to nectar-seeking wildlife as ever, and just as easy to grow!
Keep Delta Blues™ growing in its naturally shrubby shape for gorgeous privacy and screening with the branching to the ground. You'll enjoy luscious backdrops of color, outdoor garden room walls with blue floral wallpaper, and property-defining hedges the neighbors will be too busy admiring to notice you've blocked them!
Delta Blues™ has a multi-trunked and densely branched form that also means you can 'limb up' and create a spectacular branched tree form for more formal or specimen plantings! Expose the lower trunks by removing the lower third to half of the branches to create an umbrella canopy that shines on a front yard berm, as a backyard conversation piece, or landscape crown jewel!
Wonderful accents to adorn the corner of your home's foundation to soften the corners, or become the star of the show throughout your butterfly gardens, and Cottage borders! Create a small patch of shade for perennials or give the backyard dog house a pretty tree for some cooling shade! The graceful branching and late-season rebloom make Delta Blues™ ideal focal points in a meditation or Zen garden!
- Branched Spires of Bluish-Purple Flowers
- Fragrant Cut Flowers & Pollinator Friendly
- Aromatic Fine-Textured Foliage
- Smaller Compact Rounded Form
- Gorgeous Specimens, Front & Backyard Accents & Hedges
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Chaste trees and shrubs do well in everything from alkaline conditions to slightly acidic, to average well-drained garden soil to Mediterranean conditions and drought once they have fully established! Top the root zone with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch and water moderately at the roots to prevent leaf spot.
Clip spent flower heads to keep a clean look to the plant. This will also encourage a rebloom to occur. This mindful task can be quite relaxing, and it's never a chore to get close up to these fragrant plants! Lightly prune limbs, before you see new growth in early spring, by cutting back to the point that they originate from on the trunk. Cut back as much as 1/3rd of the entire canopy height in a season to control height, keeping in mind Chaste blooms on new wood.
- Full Sun Plants
- Ensure Well-Drained Soil
- Provide Moderate Regular Moisture Until Established
- Deadhead After Flowering
- Blooms On New Wood - Prune Early Spring
- Deer, Pest & Disease Resistant
