Sweet fruit from a dwarf-sized tree, if you're a true Fig lover, and really who isn't, then you'll appreciate this space-saving dwarf variety! The Black Jack Fig (Ficus carica 'Black Jack') is a beautiful and exotic-looking tree that's all the rage in growers' circles! Beloved for the bumper crop of delicious Figs it turns out each year without fail!

Black Jack Fig Tree produces large, teardrop-shaped, purplish fruit that hangs in clusters. The flesh of the Black Jack Fig is strawberry red, super juicy and succulently sweet. The Black Jack Fig starts out green before turning to the telltale rich-purple indicating it's ready for harvest!

The taste of the Black Jack is phenomenal, which is why it is often eaten fresh, right from the tree. Some growers make these Figs into preserves. They're also great for drying, which is a good way to preserve a large yield so that you can enjoy them all year long.

The Black Jack is an overachiever by any standards, producing bushels of Figs from mid-summer all the way through the month of September! There's so much to love about this tree, plus local wildlife will love it too! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 7 to 10, Black Jack grows 10-15 feet in height and 5-7 feet wide!

Planting and Application:

Black Jack is a dwarf, so it is naturally small, making it a great choice for landscapes where space comes at a premium. Let grow to full height for a fantastic specimen, trimming off lower branches to give your Fig a tree-like appearance. Or keep those lower limbs intact and use this large shrub as hedging and screening along your property! A hedgerow of fruit trees makes for a fantastic spread on your dinner table, but also property definition and privacy that serves double duty!

This is one of the best to train as Espalier; a pruning technique that has been popular in Europe for generations. After all, why shouldn't your landscaping provide you with more than just curb appeal? Imagine the desserts, jam, and snacks you'll create with these luscious fruits.

For Fig enthusiasts living in colder climates, or those who garden on their porch or balcony, the Black Jack is highly adaptable to container growth! Hardy in USDA zones 7 through 10, Northern gardeners can just bring it inside when the mercury starts to plummet.

Pot up into planters or containers to place around your seating areas or a pool for a tropical and Mediterranean feel! Or plant one in your backyard where you'll be able to enjoy the bright green, lobed foliage, and great shape this tree has when it's in all its summer glory!

  • Rich-Purple Skinned Fruit & Rosy Pink Flesh
  • Closed Eye Fig Variety
  • Sweet Huge Fruit & Dwarf Sized Tree!
  • Heavy Producer With A Long Summer to Fall Harvest
  • Vibrant Green Lobed Leaves
  • Fresh Eating, Preserves & Dried
  • Privacy & Specimen Trees

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Fruit trees like Figs require the full sun for the best health and fruit! Site your tree in at least 6 hours of direct light per day, favoring the drying power of the morning sunshine. Requiring moderately fertile and moderately moist soil, these are adaptable trees once established. Just give them some water and fruit tree fertilizer during the growing season, and some extra water throughout the summer, especially if your tree is in a pot.

Add Nature Hills Root Booster while planting for a life-long symbiotic relationship with the tiny feeder roots when planting your tree. Choose soil that is very well-drained, because one thing a Fig doesn't like is soggy soil. A 3-4 inch layer of mulch over their root systems, spread to three feet past the canopy in order to keep the roots moist and cool.

Black Jack Figs is partially self-pollinating, so it will produce fruit to some extent on its own but for the largest harvest possible, plant with other similar Figs. Start with one or two and we're sure you'll add more when you see how easy the Black Jack is to grow! Prune when dormant to control the size and remove any crossing branches, or dead limbs, and maintain an open canopy.

This selection of Fig Tree is cold-hardy down to zones 7 outdoors but will need some winter insulation/protection to survive. Some people do grow them in containers so they can be wintered in unheated garages, cool greenhouses, or areas where the plants remain dormant but will not get colder than about 20°F. These trees don't do best being brought in as houseplants, and do need to go dormant for winter, but can be temporarily housed indoors during extreme weather.

  • Full Sun For The Most Fruit
  • Well-Drained & Highly Adaptable Soil Needs
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Low Chill - About 100 Hours
  • Drought Tolerant & Cold Hardy

Fig Tree FAQ

At what age do Black Jack Fig Trees bear fruit?

Nature Hills ships Fig trees with mature root systems that are already 2-3 years of age and the typical Fig tree will begin producing fruit at 3-5 years in optimal conditions.

Where is the best place to plant a Black Jack Fig tree?

Fig trees, like nearly all fruiting trees and shrubs, need enriched, well-drained soil in a full sun location to flower and fruit the best. However, Black Jack Fig also handles partial/afternoon shade.

Are Fig Trees Self-Pollinating?

Fig Trees are partially self-fruitful but do best with a pollination partner. Black Jack Fig is a closed eyed-type of Fig and should have another similar Fig Tree planted nearby to maximize pollination chances.
