Beautiful and looks healthy

Very satisfied and would recommend!

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your experience with your Japanese Red Maple Tree. I’m thrilled it arrived looking so beautiful and healthy in your landscape.

To keep that vibrant foliage, be sure to water regularly during hot, dry spells and mulch around the root zone to retain moisture and suppress weeds. In late winter you can prune any crossing or crowded branches to maintain a strong, open canopy. A light spring feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer will support steady growth and that signature red color.

Japanese Red Maples do best in well-drained soil and afternoon shade, so if you notice any leaf scorch in summer, a little extra shade cloth or nearby taller plantings can help.

We appreciate your recommendation and are here if you have questions about pruning, watering, or seasonal care.

Rooting for your garden’s success,

This is a very nice tree! I currently have it planted in a pot. Looks healthy.

Potting a Japanese Red Maple is a great way to control the soil conditions and keep an eye on how it settles in. Glad yours is looking healthy so far. As it grows, just make sure the pot has good drainage and give it some protection from intense afternoon sun in the hottest months. Thanks for sharing the update Shawntae!

Lots of yellow spots on the tree

Lots of yellow spots on the tree, it was quite small when it came. No obvious growth, yellow spots, I've tried to contact the company 3x for questions, never a response.

Ordered two Atropurpureum maples

Ordered two Atropurpureum maples. I transporter the plastic bag that contained the pot if the tree came undoing or was not securely tied. Most of the dirt from the rootball fell out of the pot and the tree was very dried up. Contacted Nature Hills, but never received any acknowledgement.

This is my 2nd tree and it is doing well so far

This is my 2nd tree and it is doing well so far. The first one died soon after putting it in the ground. The 2nd tree seems to be doing better. It looks happier. Customer service was very helpful and efficient.

Small but healthy

I ordered and paid for a 3-4 foot tree but what arrived was barely 2 ft. It is bushy and healthy though so I didn’t make a stink about it.

Hi Josh, thank you for sharing your experience with your Japanese Red Maple. I’m sorry the tree arrived smaller than you expected, but I’m glad it’s healthy and bushy.

Japanese maples often settle into a compact form during the first season and then put energy into root establishment. With steady moisture and a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, you should see vigorous height growth next year. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and keep roots cool.

If you’d like to discuss our sizing guarantee or explore options for a replacement or partial credit, please let us know and we’ll make it right. We’re here to support you as your maple matures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature size and height of this Red Japanese Maple tree?

  • Japanese Red Maples typically reach 15-25 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide at maturity. This upright variety grows at a moderate pace, taking 10-20 years to reach full size. Plant with adequate space for its graceful spreading canopy and consider its mature dimensions when selecting your location.

Will this Red Japanese Maple survive winter in my zone?

  • Japanese Red Maples are hardy trees that tolerate tough urban conditions and survive winter in most temperate zones. This variety handles cold well once established. Check your specific hardiness zone and shop at Nature Hills for trees suited to your area.

How much sun or shade does a Red Japanese Maple need?

  • Japanese Red Maples thrive in both full sun and partial shade conditions. They actually prefer some afternoon shade in hot climates, which makes them excellent understory trees. Plant where they'll get morning sun but protection from intense afternoon heat for best foliage color.

Is the Red Japanese Maple low-maintenance for beginners?

  • Yes, Japanese Red Maples are excellent for beginners due to their versatile and easy care nature. They tolerate tough urban conditions and adapt to both full sun and partial shade. Plant in rich, well-drained soil and enjoy three seasons of color with minimal maintenance required.

How is the Red Japanese Maple tree shipped and packaged?

  • Japanese Red Maple trees are shipped bare root or in containers depending on season and size. They're carefully packaged to protect the delicate root system during transit. Shop at Nature Hills for proper packaging that ensures your tree arrives healthy and ready to plant in your landscape.

What pests and diseases commonly affect Red Japanese Maples?

  • Japanese Red Maples are generally hardy but can be affected by aphids, scale insects, and occasional fungal issues like verticillium wilt or leaf spot. Their tolerance of urban conditions makes them naturally resilient to most problems. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal diseases.

How do I prune and fertilize a young Red Japanese Maple?

  • Prune Japanese Red Maples in late fall or winter while dormant to avoid bleeding sap. Make clean cuts to remove dead, crossing, or weak branches. Fertilize lightly in early spring with balanced fertilizer, as these trees prefer lean soil and can be damaged by over-feeding.
