We love Nature Hills as much as we love our Barrenwort

Ordering from Nature Hills was easy! We love our barrenwort. It's doing great in the dry shade of our slope under a large maple tree. The barrenwort hasn't started to "groundcover" yet, but it's only been planted for a couple of months, and is healthy and not at all fussy.

Dry shade under a maple is exactly the kind of spot barrenwort was made for, so it sounds like you found a great match. Give it a full season or two to settle in and spread its roots before it really starts to fill in as a groundcover. Thanks for planting with us, Trilety. We hope it covers that slope beautifully for years to come. The Nature Hills Team

Puuurfect Plant for Low Light and/or Shade Garden:)

I've seen this plant and found it very pretty as an early spring blooming groundcover plant. Well worth trying. Also, it's not as common as many other flowering groundcover plants if you're looking for something more unusual.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is barrenwort?

  • Barrenwort is a shade-loving perennial also called Bishop's Hat or Fairy Wings, known for its distinctive bell-shaped flowers and heart-shaped foliage. This low-maintenance plant produces unusual white and yellow blooms in mid to late spring, thriving in difficult spots like dry shade and rocky soil. Plant it as groundcover in woodland gardens or shaded borders where other plants struggle.

Is Frohnleiten Barrenwort deer resistant?

  • Frohnleiten Barrenwort is both deer and rabbit resistant, making it an excellent choice for problem areas where wildlife browsing is common. The plant's naturally bitter foliage deters most garden pests while thriving in dry shade conditions. Shop at Nature Hills for this low-maintenance perennial that solves multiple garden challenges.

Can you ship Frohnleiten Barrenwort to my location during winter months?

  • Frohnleiten Barrenwort ships as dormant bare-root plants during winter months when the plant is naturally dormant. This perennial actually benefits from cold winter temperatures to ensure proper spring flowering. Check your specific zip code on the product page to confirm shipping availability and optimal planting windows for your zone.

What plants pair well with Frohnleiten Barrenwort in shade gardens?

  • Frohnleiten Barrenwort pairs beautifully with hostas, heuchera, and ferns in shade gardens. Its delicate yellow and white flowers complement the bold foliage textures of these companions. Plant it as a groundcover beneath taller shade perennials for layered interest.

Does Frohnleiten Barrenwort require regular fertilizing throughout the growing season?

  • Frohnleiten Barrenwort thrives without regular fertilizing, making it truly low-maintenance. This drought-resistant perennial performs well in poor, rocky soils where other plants struggle. A light spring feeding is optional but not necessary for healthy growth and abundant blooms available at naturehills.com.
