Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide 4 to 6 hours of morning sun followed by dappled afternoon shade. Too much direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves and cause the blooms to fade prematurely.
  • Soil: Use rich, well-drained soil amended with organic matter like compost. If you have heavy clay, plant your hydrangea in a slightly raised mound to ensure water drains away from the crown and roots.

Watering Requirements

During the first two years of establishment, check the soil daily and provide a deep soak whenever the top inch feels dry. Mature plants need consistent moisture to support their large leaves, so provide roughly one inch of water per week through supplemental irrigation if rain is scarce. Inconsistent watering often leads to wilting and smaller flower heads because the plant cannot transport nutrients efficiently.

Pruning Tips

This variety is unique because it blooms on both old wood from last year and new growth from the current season. Only prune in the early spring once you see green buds beginning to swell, cutting back only the stems that show no signs of life. Think of this like a light spring cleaning to remove winter damage, as over-pruning will remove the flower buds that are already set and ready to pop.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer specifically labeled for flowering shrubs in early spring as new leaves emerge. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers after July because they stimulate soft, leafy growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. This late-season surge of growth makes the plant vulnerable to winter die-back and can reduce the following year's bloom count.

These are majestic, large, and elegant mophead blooms and they shine in a range of jewel tones from rich, clear pink to glorious purple to royal blue. Sometimes, you'll get the full range on one plant!

It's quite simple to select the color you prefer. With a simple soil amendment, you can change the color of your Endless Summer® BloomStruck® Hydrangea to match your style.

If you've never tried the world-famous Endless Summer® line, BloomStruck® is a great plant to start with. This variety represents a big improvement over the Hydrangeas of old. It was made a home garden favorite, standing head and shoulders above other varieties.

Why? Well, most Hydrangeas bloom on old or last year's wood and that's all she wrote. But BloomStruck® blooms on both old wood left standing from last season, then it follows up with beautiful flowers on new growth emerging from the ground.

You'll enjoy an endless progression of flowers produced through the summertime. Let BloomStruck® dazzle you with its intense display of light blues, pinks and dark purple blooms. The plants seem to change daily and there is always something to notice. You might think this plant was grown just to entertain you and your guests!

Our expert growers love these hardy, disease-resistant plants. The wonderful dark green foliage is arrow-shaped. The leaves are borne on purple-red stems and feature red petioles and red veins. Sounds exciting, right? They make a fabulous contrast to the large blooms.

Don't go another year without at least one in your landscape. You'll like them so much, that you'll be back to splash out on a big display. You'll never regret this incredible choice. Order yours today from the Hydrangea lovers at Nature Hills.

How to Use Endless Summer® BloomStruck® Hydrangea

BloomStruck®'s enormous pom-pom-shaped mophead blooms are professional florist-grade quality. Start your vase collection now, as you'll be able to bring armloads indoors to place all over your tablescapes.

One will fill a simple table vase. Five blooms placed in a shallow bowl look like you spent a fortune at a Beverly Hills florist!

At only 3 to 4 feet tall, this plant can go anywhere in the landscape that gets afternoon shade. Use a long row of them on the east side of your property, or nearby taller evergreen trees.

For a compact low hedge, plant 3 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

Bring out the BloomStruck® Hydrangeas wonderful display of color with a few simple guidelines. First, use a Soil Testing kit to determine the pH of your soil. Anything below 7 is considered acidic.

For the best shade of blues and purples, the soil pH should be between 5.5 to 5.8. Adjust your soils using Aluminum Sulphate, following the directions on the package until you achieve the desired pH over time. Add garden lime to warm up the tones to a lovely clear pink.

Please be patient. It may take a season or two to get things exactly right. Adjusting the pH can have a dramatic effect on the color and overall display, so don't be afraid to experiment.

Decide if you want vivid rose pink, deep luscious purple, brilliant blue or everything in between, on the BloomStruck® Hydrangea. Change them every year, if you so desire.

Leave the last blooms of the season standing on the plant for interest during the winter months. They'll dry on the shrub and offer winter protection. The dried blooms will give you something great to look at until things start heating up again for spring. You can always snip these blooms as dried decorations indoors too!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Plant in a location with moist soils that are well-drained and rich in organic matter. BloomStruck® won't tolerate standing water. If needed, simply raise your planting to 12 to 18 inches above the soil line to improve oxygen to the root.

Hydrangeas really benefit from being mulched well. Apply at least 3 to 4 inches of mulch spread out 3 feet from the outside of the canopy. Apply Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Acid Fertilizer to maintain the soil biology and help sustain your pH for those pretty blue blooms.

This is a beautiful compact selection and only needs a limited amount of maintenance. In the first few years, only cosmetic pruning to remove winter-damaged stems is needed to shape the plant.

After the 3rd year, remove the twiggy growth and remove a portion of the older growth to make room for new shoots. These can be removed to the ground or cut back to a point in the spring.

With extra-strong stems, above-average heat tolerance, and great disease and powdery mildew resistance, BloomStruck® is an outstanding garden plant.

The one-two punch of beauty and hardiness make the Endless Summer® BloomStruck® Hydrangea one you don't want to miss. Order one or more for your garden this year from NatureHills.com!
