Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for the most vibrant flower color. While they can tolerate light afternoon shade in hot climates, too much shade leads to "floppy" stems and significantly fewer blooms.
  • Soil: These plants require "sharp" drainage, meaning water should never sit around the roots. If you have heavy clay, mix in some compost or fine gravel to create a looser environment that prevents the crown from rotting.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to help the root system get established in its new home. Once the plant is mature, it becomes quite drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during extended dry spells. Be careful not to overwater, as consistently soggy soil is the fastest way to kill a Dianthus.

Pruning Tips

Zing Rose Dianthus produces flowers on new growth, so it benefits from a "haircut" immediately after the first heavy flush of blooms fades. Use garden shears to trim off the spent flower stalks, which keeps the foliage mat tidy and encourages the plant to produce a second round of flowers later in the season. This prevents the plant from looking ragged or "opening up" in the center.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as new green growth begins to emerge. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers in the late summer or fall because they stimulate tender new growth that can be easily killed by the first hard frost. One application at the start of the season is usually enough to keep these efficient plants happy all year.

Darling carpets of vivacious scarlet pinkish red, the Zing Rose Dianthus (Dianthus deltoides) features profusely blooming, bright red blooms on delicate blue-green foliage! These scented beauties have toothy petals and almost evergreen needle-like mounds of fine-textured leaves!

Pollinators adore and relish in the early spring nectar boost and drop by for a visit once your perennial Dianthus becomes smothered with dainty blossoms in the most radiant red-pink hue you can imagine!

Zing Rose is a semi-evergreen in warm climates and mild winters, but works as a hardy perennial throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 8! This mat-forming Garden Pink will provide you with years of dainty, yet dazzling blooms on lovely frosty green foliage. The fine-textured foliage transitions to subtle, red-hues for autumn.

Planting and Application:

Create a clean perimeter, define the garden from the lawn, or contour your walkways and drive with these showy flowering zingers! Imagine long winding banks of these bright blooms along your favorite path or welcoming your guests as they walk to your front door!

Easy care enough to plant en masse, on banks on hard-to-mow hillsides, and slows erosion on slopes, Dianthus won't grow taller than 6 inches when in bloom and form spreading mounds 10-12 inches wide! Top retaining walls or the edges of containers and planters with these lovely spillers!

Cottage and perennial borders, pollinator gardens, and even Rock Gardens welcome these brilliant groundcover beauties with open arms! Tough enough for mailbox plantings and sidewalk hell strips along the road, no place is too tricky for these old-fashioned garden standards!

  • Radiant Pinkish-Red Blooms
  • Spicy Fragrance Calls Hungry Pollinators!
  • Fine-Textured Blue-Green Leaves
  • Tidy, Mounded, Low-Growing Habit
  • Border Plant & Edging, Container Spiller & Filler, & En Masse!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Creeping or Carpet Dianthus perennials love the full sun and do not do very well in anything less. To keep your red flowers looking their best, be sure to plant in a well-drained site that gets regular access to consistent, yet moderate moisture. Once established, these Dianthus are perfection in rocky, hot, dry sites and can tolerate occasional drought. But to ensure the best look for your plant, be sure to give them adequate water during the summer months and during long drought periods.

Partly evergreen in warmer climates, these are hardy and stand up to heat and humidity very well without fading, shrinking or dying back. Once the bloom has finished, you can shear back the plants to maintain a tidy, dense clump throughout the summer and into fall, even promoting a rebloom in the fall on occasion.

Deer and rabbit-resistant, it's only the butterflies and beneficial pollinators you'll see visiting your blooms!
