Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 2-7
Green Mound Alpine Currant bush (Ribes alpinum 'Green Mound') is a deciduous shrub with a particularly hardy nature. If you're seeking a reliable, hardy shrub then look no further! Your Green Mound busts out in early spring so you won't have to wait long for its vibrant presence in your yard.
The 5-inch leaves are rounded and lobed with a vibrant, bright green hue that assumes spicy tones of yellow for autumn. Hidden among the foliage are greenish-yellow clusters of blooms that you won't really notice, but your hungry beneficial pollinators and butterflies will!
The autumn leaves drop to reveal brown stems with an exfoliating tendency (which provides added decorative appeal as the shrub ages). Some Currant bushes bear masses of messy fruit, but your Green Mound is a male cultivar so you won't have to deal with the clean-up from the tiny, red berries. It's an easy-to-care-for, neat, and orderly shrub for your landscape.
Planting and Application:
Green Mound is a multi-stemmed dwarf shrub with a mound-forming habit and dense nature. It is a highly ornamental backdrop and foundation planting shrub and is ideal for low property definition and low hedges! Use these shrubs to beef up a privacy border as facer plants to hide older landscaping shrubs’ bare leggy stems! The smaller, dwarf size even makes Green Mound a great planter addition!
Alpine Currants are incredibly cold-hardy, resilient, and even long-lived. In fact, under optimal conditions, Green Mound will live up to 30 years! It's a perfect addition to your yard for some vibrant green color and exceptional texture. The dense branching is perfect to shelter songbirds, and works in Rock Gardens, en masse plantings to cover large areas of troublesome ground, poor soil, eroding slopes, and hard-to-mow hillsides in lush greenery!
- Bright Green Textured Foliage
- Inconspicuous Greenish-Yellow Flower Clusters
- Great For Pollinators
- Extremely Hardy & Adaptable Low-Growing Landscaping Shrub
- Dwarf-Sized Fruitless Male Cultivar
- Low Hedges, Foundation Plantings, Specimens, Backdrops & En Masse
#ProPlantTips for Care:
This dwarf form of the Alpine Currant withstands some of the most intolerable conditions your landscape can throw at it, including city settings and clay soils! Green Mound will also thrive in full sun to shade. Plant in full sun and partial shade throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 7 in well-drained enriched soil. These plants appreciate a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch, especially in drier and colder growing zone locations.
This tough shrub takes pruning like a champ and the Alpine Currant does appreciate an early springtime trim for the best health. If you are growing your shrub in its natural form, then instead of shearing, it's recommended you perform renewal pruning every few years instead. Simply remove the oldest branches leaving the younger thinner stems or they can be completely cut down and started over if desired.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Moderately Moist Well-Drained Soil
- Alkaline Soil, Clay, Mild Drought & Salt Tolerant
- Takes Spring Pruning Like a Champ
- Incredibly Cold-Hardy
There are so many choices in shrubs for the landscape, so it's important to pick one that can meet your needs every year. Green Mound Alpine Currant will outperform many other shrubs for years! Hurry and order your fruitless Dwarf Alpine Currant from Nature Hills today!
