Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct, unfiltered sun daily. Full sun is essential for the richest dark foliage color and heavy flower production; too much shade leads to leggy growth and duller blooms.
  • Soil: These shrubs prefer well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost at planting time to improve drainage, as "wet feet" can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply two to three times per week to help the roots establish deep in the soil. Once mature, Red Velvet is quite drought-tolerant, but providing supplemental water during dry spells prevents the plant from shedding flower buds prematurely. Consistent moisture ensures the blooms stay vibrant and the foliage remains lush throughout the heat of summer.

Pruning Tips

This shrub blooms on new wood, so you should prune it in late winter or very early spring before new growth appears. Focus on removing dead wood or crossing branches to improve air circulation, which helps prevent powdery mildew. Think of it like a thinning haircut; removing the "twiggy" interior growth directs more energy into larger, more spectacular flower clusters on the remaining stems.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the first leaves begin to emerge to fuel the summer bloom cycle. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers after midsummer, as this encourages soft new growth that can be easily damaged by the first winter frosts. A single application of a "Bloom Booster" formula in late spring can also help maximize the intensity of those deep red flowers.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Full sun and well-drained soils are best to keep your Crape Myrtle happy. They need at least six hours of sunlight a day.

If you have soggy soil or heavy clay soil, consider planting your Myrtle in containers or, berm the area by adding additional soil in a mound or raised bed to improve your drainage.

For a plant this special, our expert growers recommend Nature Hills Root Booster. This is a symbiotic planting formula that gives life-long support for tiny feeder roots.

Keep new Red Velvet plants watered on a regular schedule for best results. Apply 3-4 inches of Arborist Mulch over the root zone, but pull it back away from touching the stems directly. This insulates the roots and holds moisture in the soil evenly.

Versatile GreatMyrtles™ can be grown further north than other cultivars. There, Red Velvet Dwarf Crape Myrtle behaves as a perennial, with new growth emerging from the roots each spring.

Zone 5b and 6

It is root-hardy in cold winter areas of 5b and 6. Cut all of the stems down to the ground in early spring; all new shoots come from the roots and blooms start in late spring through fall frost.

Zones 7 - 9

Prune out the oldest, thickest stems in early spring. This will reduce the size, remove dead branches and leave the younger stems for the best bloom.
