Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the Dynamite Crape Myrtle to produce its signature cherry red blooms. Aim for at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Less sun leads to muted flower colors and increases the risk of powdery mildew on the foliage.
  • Soil: These shrubs prefer well drained soil that is moderately fertile. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in some organic compost or aged bark to improve drainage. They are quite adaptable to different pH levels but will perform best in slightly acidic conditions.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Dynamite Crape Myrtle twice a week to ensure the root system takes hold. Once established, these shrubs are remarkably drought tolerant and can handle dry spells without much fuss. However, inconsistent watering during extreme heat can lead to smaller flower clusters and premature leaf drop, so keep the soil moist during peak summer weeks.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood, meaning flowers grow on the stems produced during the current growing season. The best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring before new growth starts. Focus on removing dead wood or crossing branches to improve air circulation, which prevents fungal issues and encourages larger blooms.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as the new leaves begin to emerge. This gives the plant the nutrients it needs for the upcoming growth spurt and flowering season. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft new growth that can be easily damaged by the first frost of winter.

Cherry red blooms! If you want a brilliant red flowering shrub to brighten up your landscape, have a long look at this Dynamite® Crape Myrtle Shrub (Lagerstroemia indica 'Whit II' 'Dynamite')! It explodes with long-lasting, cherry-red color to your garden!

Dynamite® displays deep, cherry red blooms that emerge in large clusters. A unique crinkled crepe paper texture brings a delicacy to the overall look. The amazing flower power starts in mid-summer and dazzles you and your pollinators until frost. This plant literally blooms for months!

With Dynamite®, even the foliage is showy! Red-tinted, oval leaves emerge in early spring which gives it a very distinct appearance. The leaves gradually mature to dark green before the summer bloom erupts with those deep, dark, true red blooms.

After a fantastic summer of blooms, you may see the autumn leaves turn bright orange to red. The fall color display is dependent on the yearly temperatures during your climate season. Those cold fall days will boost Dynamite®'s fall show! Get out there with your camera to capture the color this deciduous shrub offers in that lovely season.

Even after the leaves drop, the display is not over. The smooth, mottled bark showcases an attractive range of tan, gray, and brown which covers the trunk and branches of Dynamite®. You'll love the winter appeal of this four-season ornamental plant.

Dynamite® is a very popular Crape Myrtle variety for both home gardens and commercial landscapes for its ease of maintenance. They are ideally suited for either formal or informal design in the home landscape, as street plantings, and in community plantings.

Planting and Application:

The versatile Dynamite® Crape Myrtle can be used in so many ways around the landscape! Try a single specimen as an incredible focal point or perfect accent shrub. You'll also love these shrubby, knockout privacy plants. Use a natural hedge to easily extend the height of a backyard fence.

Plant groups and let them grow in their naturally rounded form to create a grove for an instant woodland look, even in a small backyard! Vary the spacing a bit and clump a few closer together. Use a curving allée pattern for the most natural look and to create an outdoor room or backdrop to a Cottage garden.

Dynamite® Crape Myrtles are dense shrubs that provide great screening when grown as a privacy shrub with the foliage kept all the way to the ground. But they can also be pruned up to create a single or multi-trunked tree by removing the lower lateral limbs and exposing the main stems. Try both techniques in a mixed planting! The goal is to have fun and personalize your space!

Crape Myrtles make wonderful outdoor container plants! Plant Dynamite® in a decorative container and enjoy them on your patio or by your pool. Even balcony gardens can enjoy this eye-popping color when pruned smaller!

Create a formal street planting with regularly spaced plants, screening your home from passersby. Add a single specimen to accent a berm planting in the front yard, or as an anchor at the corner of a foundation planting. You name it!

When used for hedges or screen plants, plant them 4 to 5 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

There aren't many flowering trees around that are this dynamic, with real red-red flowers that bloom summer through early fall, until frost. This plant is easy to grow and provides year-round appeal in the landscape. If it has gotta be bold, bright, cheerful and colorful to make you happy, then Dynamite® is your Crape Myrtle!

  • Deep Cherry-Red Flowers
  • Ruffled Blossoms Last All Summer Long
  • Great For Hummingbirds & Pollinators!
  • Exciting Fall Color & Gorgeous Bark Delivers Winter Interest
  • Grow in Containers, Versatile Privacy & Accent Shrub

#ProPlantTips for Care:

The Dynamite® Crape Myrtle is adaptable to many different soil types and is resistant to powdery mildew. Provide Myrtles with good air circulation and where they will receive direct sunlight in the morning. Plant in well-drained soil and elevate planting if poor drainage is suspected. It does best in warm, full sun areas and Mediterranean sites, making a great choice in Southern and Western gardens!

This plant has a moderate to fast growth rate, so you ought to be pleased with its size. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer.

Because Crape Myrtles take very well to pruning, you can maintain your Dynamite® to any height you desire. Want a low hedge? No problem. Want a naturalized mass planting? No problem. Enhance your plantings with a 3-4 inch layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and hold in moisture.

Blooming on new wood, prune in early spring before it starts to grow and then leave all of the new growth alone as the flowers will develop in that new growth that develops after the dormant pruning is done. Deadhead after flowers fade to tidy up the shrub and encourage a late summer rebloom.

  • Heat & Humidity Tolerant in Full Sun
  • Easy to Grow In Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs - Low Once Established
  • Prune in Spring as a Shrub or Small Tree
  • Seldom Bothered By Deer
