Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for this tree, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can survive in partial shade, you will notice fewer flowers and a less vibrant display of those iconic red fruits if it doesn't get enough rays.
  • Soil: This variety prefers moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in some compost to improve drainage, or for sandy soils, add peat moss to help the ground hold onto moisture long enough for the roots to drink.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide about one inch of water per week to help the root system get established in its new home. Once mature, the Adirondack is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during extreme heat can lead to smaller fruit or early leaf drop. Aim for deep soakings at the base of the tree rather than frequent light sprinkles to encourage roots to grow deep into the earth.

Pruning Tips

This tree blooms on old wood, so the best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring before the new buds begin to swell. Focus on removing the "three Ds" which are dead, damaged, or diseased branches, and thin out any crossing limbs to improve air circulation. Since this variety has a naturally tidy, upright columnar shape, think of pruning as a light grooming rather than a heavy haircut to maintain its elegant form.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the new growth starts to emerge. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this can stimulate soft new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season surge leaves the tree vulnerable to winter injury and can invite diseases like fire blight.

The Adirondack Flowering Crabapple Tree (Malus 'Adirondack') is an ornamental Crabapple which has carmine red buds for weeks before it explodes in waxy-white, fragrant flowers with traces of red! Much to the delight of all your pollinators each spring! You'll love how the blooms seem to overwhelm the tree with color.

The Adirondack Crabapple has an upright branched, narrow manner. It has a classic vase shape, with the branches extending up into the sky. This makes it perfect for those tight spaces where you'd like a Crabapple, but just don't think you have the room. Adirondack will flower and fruit far longer than other Crabapples and is highly disease resistant! You won't have to worry about spraying it with costly chemicals.

The three inch, dark green leaves have a leathery texture and provide a dense, healthy appearance to your tree through the summer months, but you'll especially love the ½ inch fruit your tree produces. The little balls of bright orange color are a delight to behold, and hang on into the winter months. The contrast of their brilliant color against the white snow is outstanding in any yard.

Landscape Application:

Adirondacks long flowering and have persistent fruit that makes this a showy specimen all growing season long! It would be an outstanding focal accent in your front yard, flower garden or accenting a shrub border, or make these trees the border or hedge itself! A pretty flowering row of Adirondack Crabapples will make everyone on both sides of your privacy screen smile!

The Adirondack Crabapple is a veritable gift to butterflies, birds and bees, and certainly a pleasure to experience in any landscape! Add flowering beauty to any sunny landscape large or small and watch as the wildlife and compliments roll in!

  • Carmine-Red Buds Pop Open Into White Flowers
  • Vase Shaped Mature Form
  • Lovely Green Foliage All Growing Season
  • Orange-Red Fall Color
  • Persistent Red-Orange Fall Fruit For Birds
  • Specimens, Landscape Accents & Showy Hedges

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Adirondack does best in full sun for the most blooms and needs to be planted in a well-drained organic site. Providing regular water during the first few years in the ground and during prolonged drought is the best way to keep your tree growing stress-free. Rarely needing pruning, nip off any wayward branches and crossing stems in the late winter or very early spring.

  • Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Regular Moisture
  • Prune Late Winter
  • Very Easy To Grow!
