#ProPlantTips for Care:

Origami Red & White Columbine is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerating a wide range of soils except heavy, poorly drained ones. These easy-to-grow herbaceous perennials prefer afternoon shade in the hotter USDA growing zones 3 to 9! Provide a 3-4 inch layer of mulch to help keep the roots cool and moist.

Remove flowering stems after bloom to encourage additional bloom. Keep soils uniformly moist after bloom to prolong attractive foliage appearance. Though it is hardy, this Columbine will likely survive the first light frosts, and then go dormant for the winter and appreciate a 3-4 inch layer of mulching for protection in the winter. When foliage declines, plants may be cut to the ground. Resistant to Deer and rabbits, Columbines are also pest and disease-resistant.

  • Full Sun, Afternoon Shade & Partial Shade
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Regular Moisture & Appreciates Mulch
  • Deadhead & Prune Late Autumn
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant

Color in the shade for three months each spring, the gorgeous and unique blooms of Origami Red & White Columbine will add its bi-color beauty to your landscape! Order now at Nature Hills Nursery!

First to Bloom

The flower colors are just a bit different than shown in the picture. My secondary layer of petals is more of the very dark pink/maroon color (instead of the medium pink shown) with the inner petals a medium pink and the centers being the same dark pink/maroon. However, it is still a beautiful flower, and it was the very first to bloom in my flower garden this year. It began blooming two days ago (May 8th 2015.) I would buy more of these if I had any room to spare! The only thing I would caution is that the leaves can look kind of weed-like, so make sure you don't make the mistake of pulling it out when weeding.

Dear Shelly,

Thank you so much for sharing your delightful experience with the Origami Red & White Columbine! We truly appreciate your thoughtful observation about the petal colors—nature loves to throw us a beautiful surprise now and then, and it sounds like your columbine is uniquely vivid with its dark pink and maroon hues. It’s wonderful to hear it was the very first bloom in your garden this year; what an exciting way to kick off the growing season!

Your tip about the leaves blending in with weeds is an excellent reminder. Keeping an eye out while weeding to avoid pulling up such a charming plant is really valuable advice for everyone. If you do decide to add more plants but are short on room, perhaps consider a vertical container or window box? Adding lightweight, space-saving planters might give you the beauty you seek without needing extra garden space.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you’d like suggestions for companions that pair well with columbines or any planting tips. We’re always here to help nurture your beautiful garden.

Bloom on,
