Sunlight: This variety performs best in full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice the signature dark purple foliage turns more greenish and the flower production will decrease significantly without enough light.
Soil: It prefers well-drained soil that holds some moisture but never stays soggy. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised mound to improve drainage, or mix in organic compost to help loosen the texture.

Watering Requirements

For the first growing season, provide about one inch of water per week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once the root system is established, Spilled Wine is quite drought tolerant and only needs extra hydration during extreme summer heat waves. Inconsistent watering during the spring can lead to fewer trumpet shaped blooms and might cause the edges of the dark leaves to crisp.

Pruning Tips

This shrub blooms on "old wood," which means the flower buds for next year are formed shortly after the current flowers fade. The best time to prune is immediately after the late spring bloom is finished so you do not accidentally cut off next year's display. Think of it like a post-bloom haircut where you remove about a third of the oldest branches at the ground level to encourage fresh, vigorous growth from the center.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release "Rose" or "Flowering Shrub" fertilizer in early spring just as the new leaves begin to peek out. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall because this encourages tender new growth that will get damaged by the first winter frost. At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

This pretty shrub may look high-maintenance, but it's actually quite easy to grow. Plant in full sun for the best color. Weigela shrubs require at least six hours a day, with eight or more just improving the color and quality. Super easy to grow and doesn't fuss or require fussing, Weigela are very late to leaf out in spring, so be patient if you don't see signs of life on your shrub. Doing best in average garden soils, Weigela enjoys moderate moisture levels. Weigela does need well-drained soils but is not particular on the soil type. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture in the ground as well as insulates the root system from heat and chill.

Weigela won't need much pruning, or deadheading in order to rebloom. However, if you wish to give them some pruning, just be sure to do it right after that first spring flush of color. Weigela does benefit from a renewal pruning every few years, with the oldest stems removed that are not as productive to keep the shrub dense, loaded in blooms and lushly covered in foliage.
