Description
A Groundcover Rose That Earns Its Keep All Season
Red Drift® Groundcover Rose (Rosa 'Meigalpio') is one of the hardest-working low-growing roses you can plant. It blankets the ground in rich, cherry-red blooms from late spring all the way through fall, without the fuss that used to make roses feel like a part-time job. Bred by the Drift® Roses program, 'Meigalpio' is hardy in zones 4 through 11, which means it handles Minnesota winters and Texas summers with equal composure.
Gardeners love this rose because it delivers on every promise: continuous color, tidy self-cleaning flowers, excellent disease resistance, and a compact form that works in spaces where bigger shrubs simply won't fit. As America's largest online plant nursery, we ship more Red Drift roses than almost any other groundcover rose we carry, and the repeat orders tell the story.
Features and Characteristics
Red Drift matures to just 1 to 2 feet tall with a spread of 2 to 3 feet wide, making it one of the most space-efficient repeat bloomers in the Drift® family. Growth is moderate, and plants fill in noticeably within a single growing season. The flowers themselves are small, clustered pompons in a deep, saturated red that holds its color well even in strong summer heat.
- Mature height: 1-2 ft; mature spread: 2-3 ft
- Bloom period: late spring through early fall, with waves of repeat bloom
- Flower color: deep cherry-red, clustered pompon form
- Fragrance: not fragrant
- Pollinator-friendly: yes, attracts bees and beneficial insects
- Disease resistance: superior genetics resist black spot and powdery mildew
- Cold tolerance: rated for zones 4-11, including harsh northern winters
Because the spent flowers drop cleanly on their own, you get continuous red blooms without any deadheading. The foliage stays clean and glossy through the season, giving you a tidy, attractive plant even between bloom cycles. Deer resistance is good, though no plant is deer-proof in every region.
Landscaping Uses and Design Ideas
The low, mounding habit of Red Drift makes it a natural fit for sloped areas where erosion is a concern and mowing is a headache. Plant it in drifts of three or five along a bank, and you'll have stable, colorful coverage that reduces bare soil and suppresses weeds. It's equally at home along driveways, at the front of mixed borders, or spilling over a low retaining wall.
In beds and borders, Red Drift pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses like Blue Oat Grass or Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass, where the fine texture of the grass contrasts nicely with the dense, rounded rose form. It also works well alongside low-growing perennials like Coreopsis, Salvia, or Catmint, which share its preference for full sun and lean soil. For a bold mono-planting, mass several drift rose bushes together and let the sea of red do the talking.
Container growing is another strong option, especially in zone 4 and 5 gardens where you might want to move pots to a sheltered spot in winter. Use a large pot, at least 18 inches in diameter, with excellent drainage, and you'll have a compact, colorful focal point for a sunny patio or deck.

Planting and Care
Plant Red Drift in a spot that gets at least six hours of direct sun per day. It tolerates partial shade but blooms most heavily in full sun, and good air circulation helps keep the foliage as clean as the genetics already make it. Well-drained soil is important; soggy roots are the one condition this rose won't tolerate. Amend heavy clay with compost before planting, and add a two- to three-inch layer of mulch to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature.
Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, Red Drift has good drought tolerance, though a deep watering once or twice a week during prolonged dry spells will keep the bloom cycles coming strong. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced rose fertilizer, and again after the first heavy flush of bloom, typically around midsummer.
Pruning is minimal. In early spring, before new growth emerges, cut plants back by about one-third to encourage vigorous new shoots and a tidy shape. Because the flowers are self-cleaning, you won't need to deadhead during the season. A quick tidy-up with clean shears is all it takes to keep drift rose bushes looking their best year after year.
