Chokeberry is a useful selection of a native landscape shrub and one of our most popular rising new best-sellers! The word is out and professional garden designers have fallen hard for these attractive shrubs. Low Scape Hedger® Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa 'UCONNAM166') is a special variety that stays compact and gives you something beautiful to look at all growing season long.

The lush, glossy foliage grows to the ground and the dense branch structure provides a perfect scaffold for privacy screening. This plant is a wonderful resource for local pollinators. Make the most of your landscape with its beautiful flowers, lustrous leaves, tidy growth habit, and striking fall foliage. You'll be thrilled with their fiery red and orange fall color display. Let these native shrubs light up your late-season get-togethers around the firepit or your patio!

Both hard-working and super adaptable, Low Scape Hedger® was field-tested for many years to earn its status as a Proven Winners® selection. Although these aren't a favorite, we advise the use of Deer Repellent spray if you live with hungry deer in your area. Use it on the first day you plant, and follow directions to reapply. Extremely cold and heat-hardy, Aronia tolerates USDA growing zones 3 through 9!

Planting and Application:

Relish their low-maintenance nature throughout your landscape...no matter the size. They are a perfect fit to define courtyards and small space gardens. Create a showy space for your family and friends with the help of these marvelous narrow shrubs. Plant them 18 inches apart on center for a fast hedge. Let them grow naturally as an exceptionally modern hedge. Or, trim them after flowering for a manicured look. You can also use them to control erosion on slopes or embankments.

Run them along your property line or screen your patio seating. You can even keep them in outdoor containers on your patio! Use them as single specimens, as well. Augment the look of mature evergreens in your foundation plantings with their outstanding red-orange blaze of fall color. Include as a pretty backdrop for perennial borders or Butterfly Gardens. Repeat them along the middle layer of your mixed shrub border.

  • Pretty White Flowers in Spring
  • Attention-Grabbing Orange & Red Fall Color
  • Rugged & Durable, Widely Adaptable Cultivar of a Native Shrub
  • Glossy Green Foliage
  • Great Hedging Plant, Use in Large Outdoor Containers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Aronia performs beautifully in nearly any soil type; in full sun or partial shade, at least four hours of sunlight a day. Chokeberry is blissfully easy-care. They'll put up with soils that get periodically wet and dry. However, we do recommend that you supply a moderate amount of water on a regular basis to keep them at their tip-top health. Add a three-inch layer of mulch over the root zone. Pull the mulch back to avoid directly touching the stems. Wait until after the spring flowering is done before you prune any crossing or damaged branches.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Adaptable to Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune After Flowering
  • Cold-Hardy & Heat Tolerant
  • Tolerates Periodically Wet or Dry Soils

Include Low Scape Hedger® Chokeberry for a glossy, professional look. You'll appreciate their unfussy nature and many ornamental attributes. Sterile does not produce berries

Lovely plant and even more lush and full of leaves than expected. But this hybrid is sterile and the flowers do not produce berries. So it has greatly reduced value for birds and does not really fulfill the native plant function of helping wildlife.

Dear J,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful review. We’re delighted to hear that your plant has flourished with such lush foliage! However, we completely understand how the absence of berries on this particular hybrid affects its utility for supporting birds and native wildlife.

Hybrid sterility is sometimes unavoidable as breeding focuses on traits like hardiness and foliage quality, which can unfortunately impact berry production. If you’re aiming to enhance wildlife value in your garden, you might consider adding a few native plants known for fruit or berry production alongside your current selection. We’d be happy to recommend specific varieties that thrive in your region and attract birds.

Please feel free to reach out any time for personalized plant pairing suggestions to help you strike that ideal balance between beauty and wildlife support.
