Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day for the best flower production. While it tolerates partial shade, you will notice fewer purple blooms and the stems may begin to stretch or flop as they hunt for more light.
  • Soil: This perennial thrives in well-drained soil and is very forgiving of poor soil quality. If you are dealing with heavy clay that holds moisture, mix in some compost or plant in a slightly raised mound to prevent the roots from rotting in "wet feet."

Watering Requirements

New plants need a deep soak twice a week during their first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once mature, Junior Walker is highly drought tolerant and usually only needs supplemental water during extreme heat waves. If the soil stays bone dry for too long, you might notice the foliage losing its crisp silver-green color or the plant producing smaller flower spikes.

Pruning Tips

Since this plant blooms on new growth, you should shear the entire plant back by half after the first flush of flowers begins to fade in early summer. This "haircut" tidies up the mound and triggers the plant to produce a fresh set of stems and a second round of blossoms for the autumn. In late winter or very early spring, cut all the old stems down to three inches above the ground to clear the way for new spring shoots.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a general-purpose, slow-release fertilizer just once in early spring as the first green leaves appear. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers or over-feeding in late summer, as this creates "soft" growth that makes the plant leggy and weak. Keeping the nutrients at a moderate level ensures the catmint maintains its signature compact, mounded shape rather than splitting open in the middle.

Graceful, airy, and lacy, the Junior Walker™ Catmint (Nepeta x faassenii 'Novanepjun') has what it takes to survive beautifully in any landscape! Snipe a few of the airy blooms as bouquet filler, or watch as they are smothered in butterflies and bees all growing season!

Covered in airy, lacy and graceful drifts of blue flower spikes, rising above the compact, mounds of sage-green, soft, and fuzzy leaves in early summer! Top to bottom these smaller-statured plants have highly aromatic gray-green foliage!

A miniature form of Walker's Low Catmint that is sterile and non-invasive, Junior Walker™ thrives in nearly all conditions, these herbaceous perennials are repeat bloomers that put on an encore show! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, there's little that bothers these tough ornamental flowering plants!

Planting and Application:

Delicate and tough, Catmints are perfect for Perennial borders and Rock gardens, Cottage and Cut flower beds, as well as rows along hot, sunny pathways. Your Wildflower and Pollinator gardens will be fluttering with wings with these blooms that are irresistible to butterflies!

The long bloom times of these easy-growing plants are naturals in pots! Ideal container and planter-sized perennials like these look gorgeous spilling over edges and act as lacy fillers, complimenting all other kinds of plants!

Plant in drifts on slopes, roadside hell strips, or en masse where nothing else wants to grow. Catmints are beautiful in masses and perfect border-sized plants along your drive or on the sunny balcony and patio!

  • Sterile, Dwarf Non-Invasive Form
  • Soft Gray-Green Foliage
  • Spikes of Airy Lavender-Blue Flowers
  • Fragrant Top to Bottom!
  • Spreading, Compact Ornamental Perennial
  • Attracts Butterflies & Pollinators!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Full sun-loving Junior Walker™ handles poor, rocky, gravel, or even clay, Perennial Catmint are traditionally also very drought and pollution-resistant plants! Plant without a worry in any type of well-drained soil! Deer and rabbit resistant as well, not much in the way of pests or diseases bother these incredibly versatile and adaptable perennials except wet soil! Water enough to establish new plants, plus supplemental water during extended drought and to protect your investment!

Great for fire-wise landscaping and xeriscaping dry sites in airy texture! Shear after the first wave blooms to encourage a second flush, and again in late fall or early spring to clean up the mounds. These plants are also deer and rabbit-resistant as well!
