Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the deepest burgundy foliage and the sweetest berries, plant in full sun for at least six to eight hours a day. While it handles partial shade, you will notice fewer flowers and the leaves will lean more toward a dull green rather than that signature rich wine color.
  • Soil: These plants are acid lovers that thrive in a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. If you have heavy clay, plant them in a raised bed or a mound of acidic potting mix and peat moss to ensure their roots never sit in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide about one inch of water per week to help the root system anchor itself. Once established, Burgundy Blueberries are quite resilient, but inconsistent moisture during fruit development will result in small, shriveled berries instead of plump ones. Think of the soil like a wrung-out sponge; it should stay consistently damp but never muddy.

Pruning Tips

This variety produces fruit on "old wood," meaning the buds for next year are set shortly after this year's harvest. Only prune in late winter or very early spring to remove the oldest, graying canes or any dead wood. By thinning out the center of the bush, you allow light and air to reach the middle, which prevents mildew and helps the inner berries ripen.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply an acidic fertilizer, such as one labeled for Azaleas or Camellias, once in early spring before new growth starts. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers in late summer or autumn. Late-season feeding forces soft, tender growth that won't have time to "harden off" before the first freeze, leaving the tips of your bush vulnerable to winter kill.
