Where to Plant

Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun to ensure sturdy stems and the most vibrant yellow blooms. While they tolerate light afternoon shade, too much shade results in fewer flowers and floppy foliage that leans toward the light.
Soil: These irises thrive in rich, organic soil that holds moisture well without becoming a swamp. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost to improve drainage while keeping the roots cool and hydrated.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Iris twice a week to help the deep root system establish itself. Mature plants are remarkably drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during the summer can lead to browning leaf tips and smaller blooms the following year. Think of consistent watering as an investment in the health of next season’s flower show.

Pruning Tips

Siberian Irises bloom on new growth produced each spring, so there is no worry about cutting off flower buds during the winter. Once the foliage turns yellow or brown after a hard frost, cut the entire clump down to about one inch above the soil line. This clean slate approach removes hiding spots for pests like iris borers and keeps the garden looking tidy for spring.

Fertilizer Needs
