Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Moody Blues® Dark Blue Veronica in full sun for at least 6 hours each day. While it can tolerate light afternoon shade in very hot climates, you will get the best flower density and the deepest indigo color by keeping it in the brightest spot possible.
  • Soil: These perennials love rich, well drained soil that does not stay soggy. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost or aged bark to help the roots breathe, as they may rot if they sit in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to help the roots reach deep into the soil. Once established, this Veronica is quite drought tolerant, but providing an inch of water during dry spells keeps the foliage lush and prevents the lower leaves from yellowing. Inconsistent watering often leads to smaller flower spikes and a shorter overall bloom cycle.

Pruning Tips

This plant primarily blooms on new growth, so it benefits from a "haircut" throughout the season. Deadhead the spent flower spikes by cutting back to the next set of leaves to encourage a second and third flush of blue blooms. In late autumn or early spring, cut the entire plant back to about 2 inches above the ground to make way for fresh, vigorous stems.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as new growth emerges to fuel the heavy blooming period. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, because this encourages soft, leafy growth that is easily damaged by the first frost. A simple organic compost top-dressing each spring also works wonders for soil health.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Also known as Speedwell, these are extremely easy to care for and very low-maintenance. Veronica just needs full sun and well-drained soil, and it's good to go. If it's extra hot out or hasn't rained in a while, you can water it, but it does well without a lot of fuss! Top off the root system with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch for moisture retention and insulation. To keep the flower show from slowing down, you can deadhead your Moody Blues® Dark Blue Veronica to encourage new blooms. Once the foliage dies back after frost, you can prune the mound.

  • Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Enriched Soil & Regular Moisture
  • Deadhead For Rebloom & Prune Mounds Late Autumn
  • Seldom Damaged By Deer or Rabbits
  • Easy to Care For Perennials

If you love butterflies and brilliant flowers, you will love the Moody Blues® Dark Blue Veronica. This reliable and low-maintenance plant offers maximum blooms without consuming your day.
