Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Woods Pink Aster in full sun, which means at least six hours of direct light daily. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice fewer flowers and a higher risk of powdery mildew if it does not get enough morning sun to dry the leaves.
  • Soil: These perennials love rich, organic soil that drains well but stays consistently moist. If you have heavy clay, mix in some compost or aged manure to improve drainage so the roots do not sit in water and rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your aster twice a week to help the root system get established. Once it is mature, this variety is quite drought tolerant, though a lack of water during the heat of summer will result in smaller blooms and "crispy" lower leaves. Aim to water at the base of the plant rather than over the foliage to keep the leaves healthy and green.

Pruning Tips

Woods Pink Aster blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. For a fuller, more compact look with more flowers, "pinch back" the stems by about 2 inches in early June. This acts like a haircut that encourages the plant to branch out instead of growing tall and floppy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see new green shoots appearing. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this encourages soft, lush leaf growth that is highly attractive to pests and more susceptible to winter damage. Instead, let the plant focus its energy on hardening off for the coming cold.

The Woods Pink Aster (Aster x dumosus 'Woods Pink') has clear purplish-pink flowers with gold centers! These daisy-like flowers are long-lasting and bloom from August through September. With its perfectly clean, compact, dark green, disease-resistant and rust-resistant foliage, Woods Pink Aster has superb flowers and longer bloom times!

ing domed mounds full of flowers (especially after a bit of pinching in the spring) you'll enjoy a neat and tidy appearance all growing season! And in late summer through the autumn, the entire mound will be covered in these cheerful blossoms! Butterflies looking for a late snack flock to these flowers! When left unpinched or sheared, they form informal mounds and are still covered in blooms!

Very cold-hardy and deer-resistant plants, Woods Pink retains its native family's adaptability and endurance! Featuring fast growth and finely textured deep green leaves, they look fantastic even when not in bloom! Growing to about a foot high and 2 feet wide, Dwarf Aster can easily be tucked into large existing gardens and small yards with ease and convenience!

Planting and Application:

Woods Pink makes an excellent front-of-the-garden feature and cleans up the edges of the garden. Looking great paired with Woods Purple and Woods Blue Asters, they are fantastic support greenery all spring and summer to set off other plants growing around them, before standing out themselves throughout the fall. Dress up a cottage garden with rosy blooms and brighten the dreary garden or cut flower borders as other plants wind down for the year with a fresh flush of new color!

Aster are always highly attractive to bees, butterflies and birds and looks beautiful all season long in a pollinator garden and cutting border! Use this plant in borders, mass plantings, in perennial gardens and along paths and garden edges without worry its demure height and spread will take over in any way. The neat and tidy mounds fill with flowers, making them ideal facer plants, fronting foundation gardens or along a sidewalk or driveway! The small size is also the perfect addition to planters and porch pots for a burst of color later in the season!

  • Big Purplish Pink Blooms
  • Attracts Butterflies!
  • Late Summer Blooming Through Fall
  • Easy-Care & Great in Containers
  • Low, Small Mounded Edging, Facer Plants & Space-Saving Accent

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Aster 'Woods Pink' does require full sun, but can take some afternoon shade in the hottest of its favored USDA growing zones 4 through 8. Plant these herbaceous perennials in a moderate soil range with good drainage that does not become extremely dry during the summer. Lower moisture needs once established, just water enough to help it establish as a new plant, and provide supplemental water in the heat of summer. Pinching back the stem tips in late spring and early summer will produce denser growth and heavier blooming. This plant may be divided every few years in the spring.

  • Full Sun
  • Cold Hardy & Adaptable
  • Moderate Moisture & Well-Drained Soils
  • Pinch Back in Late Spring/Early Summer
  • Rust, Disease & Deer Resistant
