Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This dogwood performs best in full sun to partial shade, needing at least 4 to 6 hours of direct light daily. While it handles shade well, more sun ensures the brightest yellow stem color during the winter months.
  • Soil: It thrives in moist, well-drained soils but is famous for its ability to handle "wet feet" in boggy areas. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage; for sandy soil, add peat moss to help hold onto necessary moisture.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Arctic Fire® Yellow Twig Dogwood twice a week to ensure the root system establishes deeply. Once mature, this shrub is quite adaptable to various moisture levels, though it prefers consistent hydration to maintain lush summer foliage. Inconsistent watering or extreme drought can lead to leaf scorch and may result in less vibrant stem color the following winter.

Pruning Tips

Since the brightest yellow color occurs on the youngest stems, this plant benefits from a "renewal pruning" approach every twond or third year. In early spring before new growth starts, cut about one-third of the oldest, thickest canes down to the ground. This encourages the plant to send up fresh, vigorous shoots that will provide the most intense winter color, acting much like a rejuvenating haircut for the shrub.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the new leaves begin to emerge to fuel the season's growth. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this can stimulate soft new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This late-season growth is easily damaged by freezing temperatures, which can invite disease or dieback.

Brilliant yellow electrifies the winter snow! The vibrant Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Arctic Fire® Yellow Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea 'SMNCSBD') is a fantastic four-season shrub with something to add to your landscape every part of the year!

Bursting onto the spring scene, those vibrant yellow stems that brightened your winter landscape become cloaked in lush green foliage with deep veins and texture! Spring also brings fizzy white clusters of flowers for hungry pollinators to stop by and feast on! These vibrant leaves turn a mellow yellow for fall just as this great shrub puts on a third colorful display!

The dense branching is fantastic cover and nesting for songbirds, while Arctic Fire® produces clusters of pure white berries that songbirds go crazy for! That's when the fantastic fall-colored leaves drop to reveal the buttery yellow twigs for the winter! Snip a few stems for indoor floral design or spruce up winter planter arrangements!

Planting and Application:

Arctic Fire® Yellow-Twig Dogwood is a flashy winter interest shrub that's also wildlife-friendly! Ideal size for hedges and privacy, as well as colorful back-of-the-border plantings. Your house will stand out from the rest with a row of these tough shrubs along your front border along the road. Anchor garden beds and add a pop of color to mixed shrub plantings with low-care plants!

Mix with other Dogwood species like the Red-Twig Dogwood and other Yellow Twig Dogwood for a colorful winter landscape, or other colorful bushes like Ninebark, Burning Bush and Bush Honeysuckle. Plant a hedgerow of shelter for birds, while gaining privacy and screening that lights up your landscape all year!

Best in groups or massed to highlight the lovely foliage, and in winter really stand out with their showy red stems! Able to thrive in tough conditions, the spreading habit of these shrubs makes them perfect on slopes and able to stop erosion when planted en masse. This wonderful, mid-sized shrub can even tolerate soil that stays wet on occasion. Place them at the outer edges of a Rain Garden for an excellent ornamental display.

  • Textured Green Foliage
  • Clusters of White Spring Blooms & Summer Berries
  • Fantastic Yellow Stems
  • Four-Season Interest
  • Floral Design, Hedges, Specimen & Wildlife Shrubs

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Arctic Fire® is a type of yellow-twigged, Redosier Dogwood shrubs are widely adaptable and thrives in full sun and partial shade, alkaline and clay soil, and even grows well in saline conditions! Dogwood are notoriously good at handling occasionally soggy sites. Mulch with a layer of arborist bark chips 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside of the canopy to ensure the root stays cool in the hot summer.

Pruning can be done while dormant to control size and shape. Naturally wanting to increase in size by suckers, you can control spread by trimming roots with a spade to remove root suckers if their spread is not wanted or needs maintaining. Since the color of the stems is best on younger stems, you can either prune to the ground in late winter to renewal pruning near the ground or just remove the older stems every few years.

  • Widely Adaptable in Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Thrives in Both Wet or Dry Conditions
  • Tolerant of a Wide Range of Well-Drained Soil Types
  • Prune/Renewal Prune Late Winter
  • Salt Tolerant & Seldom Bothered By Deer
