The small bit mighty Proven Winners® Cityline® Venice Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla CITYLINE 'Venice Raven') has a natural dwarf habit. This lovely ColorChoice® Bigleaf Hydrangea from Germany is compact and dense, with far more flowering stems than most others. Cityline® Venice is an attention-getter with giant fuchsia blooms and fresh, attractive green foliage. The gorgeous toothy petal edges add a frilly effect to the large round mopheads.

Cityline® Venice stays small, compact and has a neat, tight habit so little to no pruning is required. The deep green, toothy foliage has a lush quilted appearance and are the perfect backdrop for other plants in the garden and to offset those gorgeous blooms!

Like all other Cityline® varieties, it was bred for stronger stems to hold its large, heavy flower head. Large beautiful blooms are great for dried or cut flowers and stand up in the vase as well as standing up to storms and rain. Hardy to USDA growing zones 5 through 9, these rarely grow over 2 feet tall and spread to a tidy 2-3 feet in mature width. You may see some color variations depending on your soil's pH, with your pink blooms becoming more lavender to blue as the soil becomes more acidic.

Planting and Application:

Venice Hydrangeas place is front and center in the shrub border, patio garden, or your best container. It is small enough for mixed planters or for mixed planter gardens, any tight spot, so any smaller urban lot or modern courtyard can enjoy these brilliant blooms without sacrificing space! Even balcony gardens and rooftops in the city can find room for a few of these compact plants!

In larger landscapes, plant rows of these low-growing shrubs as a groundcover, and as a facer shrub to hide the leggy bare stems of larger shrubs and trees. Gorgeous in the Cottage garden, or along the front of your home's foundation plantings! Create edging along paths or your driveway that shines with vivid color all growing season!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Venice Bigleaf Hydrangeas are easy to care for, requiring partial shade and well-drained soil, favoring morning sun and afternoon shade in the hottest of its favored growing zones. Only those growing in the cooler of its flavored growing zones can handle full sun. Moisture is a necessity for this plant, so do not let them dry out during the summer's heat. Keep regularly watered and apply a thick layer of mulch over the roots to keep them cool and moist. Plant in about any well-drained soil that's organically enriched.

Only deadhead Bigleaf Hydrangea after they've flowered or else you may risk removing next year's blooms. Bigleaf Hydrangeas bloom on last year's wood, so it's best to prune only if needed, and in the early spring simply remove stems that died back in the winter. You can also use renewal pruning to remove the older stems completely to keep the plants vigorous and healthy. Because 1, 2, and 3 year old branches have the best for flowering and older stems should be cut out to the ground in early spring.

Bigleaf Hydrangea flower colors are pH dependent. You'll achieve the best fuchsia huge in alkaline soil, so amend your planting site accordingly. Preferring a pH between 6.0 to 6.2, add garden lime to keep them looking their best. In more acidic conditions, you'll have a purple to blue bloom.

  • Full Sun & Prefers Part Shade/Afternoon Shade
  • Moist Enriched Environment
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Prefers Mulched Beds
  • Prune Early Spring or After Flowering
  • Best Pink Color In Alkaline Soils
