Your Berlin Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla CITYLINE 'Berlin Rabe') was bred specifically for stronger stems...and it needs it. The flower heads are large and heavy, with a rich, pink hue that's amazing to behold. Berlin Hydrangea is a Bigleaf Hydrangea variety and it's the largest and fastest-growing plant in the Cityline series!

The round, snowball-like balls of blossoms appear July through August, perfectly accented by the glossy, dark-green foliage. As the hot-pink blossoms age, the color transitions to a lovely green...so it's like getting two flower colors on one plant! These beautiful blooms are great for dried or cut flowers and stand up in the vase as well as standing up to storms and rain.

It has a compact habit, so along with the strong stems, never needs pruning! Hardy to USDA growing zones 5 through 9, these rarely grow over 2-3 feet tall and spread to a tidy 2-3 feet in mature width. Berlin has also been bred to be mildew and disease-resistant. As with other Bigleaf Hydrangeas, you will see some color variations depending on your soil's pH. Acid soil will produce blue flowers, with alkaline allowing pink tones to develop.

Planting and Application:

One would be right at home front-and-center of your patio garden, shrub border or even growing in your best container. In larger landscapes, plant rows of these low-growing shrubs as a groundcover, and as a facer shrub to hide the leggy bare stems of larger shrubs and trees, or along the front of your home's foundation plantings. Create edging along paths or your driveway that shines with vivid color all growing season!

Completely at home front and center in the shrub border, patio garden, or your best container. It is small enough for mixed planters or for container gardens! Any tight spot, any smaller urban lot or modern courtyard can enjoy these brilliant blooms without sacrificing space! Even balcony gardens and rooftops in the city can find room for a few of these compact plants!

  • Large Green & Pink (or Blue) Flower Heads
  • Strong Stems Support Flowers
  • Toothy Green Foliage
  • Naturally Dwarf & Compact Size
  • Small-Space Gardening, Containers & Planters, & Low Hedges

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Bigleaf Hydrangea are easy to care for, requiring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, favoring morning sun and afternoon shade in the hottest of its favored growing zones. Moisture is a necessity for this plant, so do not let them dry out during the summer's heat. Keep regularly watered and apply a thick layer of mulch over the roots to keep them cool and moist. Plant in about any well-drained soil that's organically enriched. Only prune Bigleaf Hydrangea after they've flowered or else you may risk removing next year's blooms.

  • Full Sun & Part Shade
  • Moist Enriched Environment
  • Well-Drained Soil & Prefers Mulched Beds
  • Disease & Powdery Mildew Resistant
  • Prune After Flowering

Hydrangeas are always spectacular additions to any landscape! And the Cityline® Berlin Bigleaf Hydrangea delivers the usual dramatic beauty of huge flowers, while also providing the stems to properly display them. You won't be sorry you planted this sensational, hardy variety! Order yours today at NatureHills.com!

strong stems

My huge blooms are held upright by my Berlin hydrangea. I do not need to tie them up like I have to for a couple of other hydrangeas I have.

Hi Candi,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Cityline® Berlin Bigleaf Hydrangea! It’s fantastic to hear that its strong stems are reliably supporting your large blooms without the need for extra ties—sometimes managing those heavier-headed hydrangeas can be quite the task. Your hydrangea sounds truly healthy and well-established!

If you ever want to keep those blooms thriving even more, consider regular deep watering during dry periods and a balanced fertilizer in early spring to maintain strong stem growth. Also, gentle pruning after the blooming season can help encourage next year’s blooms and maintain sturdy branches.

We’re thrilled that your hydrangea is flourishing happily in your garden. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or want tips on planting companions for your hydrangeras!

Rooting for your garden’s success,
