Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Growing Zones 6-9
Big 'red ball' clusters of colorful brackets and tiny flowers - that's what Bloomables® Akadama® Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'SK2DAMA') means! You'll enjoy incredibly large flower clusters from this mophead and the classic textured green foliage! The deep pinkish-red bracts are long-lasting and darken as the flowers age!
Akadama® starts as greenish buds in spring and slowly transforms into the crimson blooms that will be an eye-popping specimen all summer! You'll also be the pollinator hot spot! The compact growing foliage and dense form have disease resistance, combined with great fall color too! The green sometimes gains a touch of purple during cooler weather.
Bigleaf Hydrangeas have aptly-named large leaves, quilted and textured, and look gorgeous as backdrops and large accents. French or Snowball Hydrangea changes color slightly depending on the pH of your soil, so you'll enjoy bluish blooms in acidic soils, purples in neutral and pinks in alkaline, so fertilize and amend your soil to keep it on the alkaline side for these impressive bold red orbs!
Planting and Application:
Akadama® are perfect focal points, whether in the garden or in your floral bouquets! So be sure to plant a couple extra so you have plenty for both, and your pollinators, and extra for when these big rounded blooms dry on the plant and become gorgeous winter decor or dried crafts! Improve Pollinator gardens, cutting and Cottage borders, as well as Perennial gardens with a new addition that is sure to kick things up a notch!
These are prime specimen and focal point plants, they're also durable and hardy for hot growing zones! Plant along property borders as backdrops for smaller shrubs and perennials, along your home's foundation on the shadier side, en masse or as low privacy hedges!
- Large Rounded Crimson Flower Clusters
- Bright Green Compact Foliage
- Pollinator-Friendly, Fresh & Dried Arrangements
- Hedges, Screening, Specimen & En Masse
- Heat & Disease Tolerant
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Bigleaf Hydrangeas do best in the morning sun and afternoon shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler growing zones of 6-9. Provide a heavily mulched, well-drained garden bed that's enriched with ample organic matter and consistent moisture. Most Hydrangea bloom on last year's wood so don't cut them back in fall or spring - but wait to see if any pruning needs to be done to remove any dead branch tips as they begin to grow in spring. As the plants age, it is best to remove a few of the oldest fattest canes out to the ground leaving in some younger stems for best bloom. Old blooms can be removed in fall or spring.
- Full Sun & Part Shade
- Enriched Moist Alkaline Soil
- Mulch Very Well
- Prune Early Spring As New Growth Starts to Emerge
