Want to keep people off your property, or deter someone from creeping around under your windows? Get a Doberman of a shrub, and order some Warty Barberry (Berberis verruculosa) from Nature Hills!

Named after the wart-like growths along the stem, the sharp thorns make a very effective barrier plant, but Warty Barberry also has a handsome charm! The spiny broadleaf evergreen has leaves that are quite attractive! This is a Barberry, after all, one of the best foliage shrubs on the market.

Each leaf is Lustrous green on top, and they are all highlighted with a silvery sheen on the bottom, which catches the sun! Fragrant yellow blooms are sprinkled under the branches in springtime and will be visited by bees and butterflies.

But Warty Barberry's sweeping branches and shiny foliage look great all year long! The leaves then burnish to a deep purple for fall color and become accented by glossy, black berries beloved by the birds. This shrub has a fantastically formal shape with a heaping helping of personality. Perhaps they'll tickle your fancy with their whimsical higgelty-piggelty, downward-sweeping short branches.

Please note, that NatureHills.com uses Plant Sentry™ to abide by every federal and local regulation for plant materials. Although this Barberry is not considered invasive, if your state has prohibited Barberry from being planted for any reason, we have blocked those states from purchasing and shipping into those restricted states. Type in your zip code above the Plant Highlights to check, then learn more about how we protect your environment from invasive plants.

Landscape Application:

These are tough shrubs that are used on commercial properties. They also be used at your home at the property line and underneath windows to deter any peeping toms. If your security planting needs to look good, pair it with taller Rugosa Roses for rugged elegance, fragrance, and style. Add in some of the other Barberry shrubs and you'll create a barrier planting that is no joke.

Direct traffic and protect your property with this variety. The very sharp thorns of Warty Barberry make a great deterrent at your property line. Finally, you'll be able to stop people from cutting across your lawn.

Take a look at your view from your deck or patio. Do you see mature evergreen trees that frankly need a boost of visual appeal? Use these special rounded shrubs as a noteworthy partner for other plants. Like a great supporting actor, Warty Barberry will draw out the best performance from the "superstars" of the plant world.

If you'll have full sun all day long, use plants like tall Ornamental Grasses and Warty Barberry to anchor the bed. Next, add David Viburnum, Baptisia, or Landscape Roses into the mix. You'll adore the contrasting appeal of a flowering shrub in your design! Finally, fill in with mounded, flowering perennials or small shrubs like Lavender, Spirea or Bluebeard.

For partial shade positions that receive at least four hours of sunshine a day, switch gears to include flowering Hydrangeas and the colorful Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo. Mulch it all well using decorative wood mulch.

Give ole' Warty Barberry enough room to grow to its full height and spread. Create an island garden bed in between the deck and your trees. Space the new bed about 15 feet away from the trees. Curve it or use a classic kidney shape.

  • Unique Broadleaf Evergreen Barberry
  • Green, Glossy Leaves Are Spiny-Toothed & Silvery Underneath

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Warty Barberry is very easy to grow and performs well in either full sun or partial shade. Give it at least four hours of sun a day. It also requires well-drained soils. Create a raised planting bed, or berm if your soil holds water for a long time. In early spring, apply an acidic plant fertilizer formula. Follow label directions. We like to encourage the use of pine bark or pine straw mulch to help keep the soil slightly acidic and hold moisture in the soil too.

New Barberry bushes do need regular water during their first growing season in the ground. Prune if you need to, just wear thick, leather gloves before working with Barberry. Use a long-handled lopper, and try to remove all the branches and twigs right after this shrub is done flowering.

While thorny and not that tasty, in deer country, use Deer Repellent Spray on every single new planting from day one. Reapply according to the directions through the growing season. That new growth becomes quite tasty when there's nothing else around to eat.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade

  • Moderate Moisture Needs
