Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-7
Add some royalty to your landscape with the Royal Burgundy® Barberry bush (Berberis thunbergii 'Gentry')! This petite mounding version of this garden stalwart has small soft leaves emerging in crimson red before aging to a lush purple red that holds their color all summer without fading, burning, or wavering in the slightest!
Forming a low but wide spreading mounded shrub with an ornamental form, the brilliant colored leaves present a fine texture and plenty of color to the sun garden. Cold and heat-hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 7, these colorful deciduous shrubs turn darker in the fall - transforming into a ravishing black-red.
It is a perfect habitat plant and blends into wildlife-friendly or natural gardens, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to the darling little yellow blossoms, and later berries that songbirds will snap up! It is even beautiful in containers, both in leaf and out of season, when the berries shine on the bare stems.
Planting and Application:
Barberry is one of those specimen plants that should be in every garden. Versatile, easy, hardy, and colorful, it's hard to find another plant with so many uses! In some locations of the country, Barberry does a bit "too well". Find out if you can safely include these colorful shrubs in your landscape by typing in your zip code in our Hardiness Zone Finder, located above the Plant Highlights to find out, or contact your local County Extension Office for more information.
This burgundy shrub makes a great edging plant and adds interest to your front foundation. Planted in mass or long backdrops and hedges, Royal Burgundy® creates big splashes of color and easily stands up to pollution.
Royal Burgundy® is also perfect for formal gardens or Asian-inspired landscaping and looks great reflected in a pool, off-setting evergreens, and shrubs with chartreuse foliage! It will cascade over rocks and spill over retaining walls, while It nuzzles up to landscape boulders and softens the hard edges of concrete walks!
Its richly-colored leaves will flesh out foundation plantings without blocking your view. It plays well with others and mixes right into existing borders and beds! Create a privacy screening hedge that few want to tangle with! Try planting a few beneath first-story windows to boost your home's security in a passive and pretty manner!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Barberry will have the best coloration in full sun. Highly adaptable to any type of well-drained soil, plant with Nature Hills Root Booster in a slightly acidic location and ensure a consistent watering schedule for new plants. Try using the Finger Test to make sure you don't let new installations dry out. Once established Barberry is quite drought-tolerant! Provide a nice 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch to protect the top of the roots. You can let it grow freely or prune or shear after flowering.
- Great Color In Full Sun
- Moderate Moisture & Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Low-Maintenance - Prune After Flowering If Needed
- Deer & Drought Tolerant
