Ribbons of gold! You'll feel like you've struck it rich when you include the dwarf Bonanza Gold Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Bogozam') in your garden this year! Bonanza Gold is a dwarf form of Golden Barberry that commands special attention in the landscape due to its outstanding bright-gold foliage!

A densely packed little shrub that matures at just 18 inches in height but can spread up to 3 feet wide, creating drifts of easy care and low-maintenance gilded landscape color! The tiny leaves are slow-growing which equates to nearly-no-maintenance plantings and dwarf shrubs that almost look 'fluffy'! Just don't try petting Bonanza Gold, because each stem is lined with tiny thorns that few will want to tangle with!

Tiny yellow bell-shaped flowers will bring in the pollinators even if you don't notice and in the fall, little berries form that are quickly gobbled up by songbirds!

This low, spreading form of Gold Barberry is hardy throughout a wide range of USDA planting zones from 4 to 9! Deer, pests, and diseases seldom bother Barberry bushes, but in some areas of the country, these shrubs can perform a bit "too well". Find out if Nature Hills can safely ship these colorful shrubs to you by typing in your zip code in our Hardiness Zone Finder, located above the Plant Highlights to find out. Or contact your local County Extension Office for more information.

Planting and Application:

Bonanza Gold produces gracefully arching branches of gleaming yellow that are sure to light up any landscape while maintaining a small, tidy nature where it will lend brightness anywhere it goes without sacrificing space.

Add a golden strip of Bonanza Gold Barberry as a showy facer plant or edging accent in front of your dark evergreen hedges and foundation plantings! You'll give your home's curb appeal a big boost! Or try a row along the front edges of your landscape beds - both formal or informal - for a gilded transition between garden and turfgrass!

A fantastic filler and spiller, try planting Bonanza Gold along the top of a retaining wall, tumbling through a Rock Garden, on hard-to-mow slopes and eroding hillsides, or just as brilliant and dense golden en masse drifts that catch the eye without all the work! You'll even love seeing this showy plant spilling out of large containers with a tall feature shrub in the middle and Bonanza Gold all around its base.

Try adding a golden ribbon along a path or walkway, those harsh hell strips along the road or sidewalk, or give your driveway the royal treatment with a row along either side! Just give yourself and passersby a foot or so of space to avoid snagged pantlegs.

Front yard landscaping has never been easier with these tough and ornamental shrubs, and you can create big splashes of color that easily stand up to urban environments and pollution. Plus the thorny stems will keep foot traffic from cutting through your space!

  • Brilliant Golden Yellow Foliage
  • Densely Packed Low-Growing Shrubs
  • Wide Spreading Landscape Coverage & Groundcover
  • Butterfly & Bird Friendly - Resists Deer
  • Low-Maintenance Edging, Borders, Container Plants & Space-Saving Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Japanese gold-leafed Barberry will do best with full sun access and have the best gold color. But in hotter climates, Barberry can tolerate partial shade in the afternoon, however, the foliage color may not be quite as brilliantly colored.

These shrubs need well-drained soil that is slightly acidic and well-mulched to block weed competition. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster and ensure a consistent watering schedule for new plants. Try using the Finger Test to make sure you do not allow your new plants to dry out, but once established, Barberry becomes wonderfully waterwise! If needed, Prune after flowering to tidy up the shape or shear into a formal mat.

Deer don't prefer the taste and the thorns can be a deterrent, however, in desperate times deer can nibble on the new growth. This is why we always recommend Deer Repellent Spray on new plantings from day one if you live in an area with heavy pressure. Reapply according to the directions through the growing season.

  • Full Sun For Best Color - Won't Burn Or Fade
  • Acidic Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs - Waterwise Once Established
  • Rarely Needs Pruning - Prune After Flowering Only
  • Pest & Disease Resistant & Deer Seldom Bother Barberry
  • Very Heat & Cold-Hardy
