Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Your tree needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce the best fruit. While it can survive in partial shade, you will likely see fewer blooms and smaller, less flavorful apples.
  • Soil: These trees crave well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter and slightly acidic. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost to improve drainage so the roots do not sit in water; for sandy soil, compost will help hold the necessary moisture.

Watering Requirements

Consistency is the secret to a happy apple tree, especially during the first year while it establishes its root system. Water deeply once or twice a week, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings, but check container-grown trees daily as they dry out faster. Once established, the tree becomes moderately drought-tolerant, but inconsistent watering can cause the tree to drop its fruit prematurely or produce apples that are small and mealy.

Pruning Tips

Because this is a columnar tree, it naturally grows vertically and fruits on short, stubby branches called "spurs" that grow off the main trunk. Prune in late winter or early spring while the tree is still dormant to remove any broken branches or vertical "water sprouts" competing with the main leader. Avoid cutting off the fruiting spurs, as this is where your apples will form; think of pruning like a light grooming to keep the central shape tidy rather than a heavy haircut.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed your tree in early spring just as new green growth begins to emerge using a balanced, slow-release fruit tree fertilizer. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the growing season (after July), as this encourages tender new growth that will be damaged by winter frost.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Apple trees need full sun for the most blooms and best fruit production. Any site receiving 6 plus hours of direct sunlight per day is optimal. Be sure to choose a site with great air circulation. Add Nature Hills Root Booster while planting for a life-long symbiotic relationship with the tiny feeder roots.

Fruit trees also require consistent moisture or best crops. Plant in rich, organic medium and well-drained soil on the slightly acidic side. Add compost to your planting site to add higher organic matter to the soil.

For best results, fertilize your tree regularly with Dr. Earth Fruit Tree Fertilizer or a good organic, slow-release fertilizer. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.
