Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Idared Apple Trees require full sun, meaning at least six to eight hours of direct exposure daily. While they can survive in partial shade, you will notice a significant drop in fruit production and the skin color will remain green rather than developing its signature bright red flush.
  • Soil: These trees thrive in deep, well drained loamy soil that allows roots to spread easily. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost or plant on a slight mound to improve drainage, as "wet feet" or soggy roots can lead to rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide 10 gallons of water per week to ensure the root system becomes fully established. Mature trees are moderately drought tolerant but require deep soaking every 10 to 14 days during dry spells to prevent the fruit from dropping early or becoming shriveled. Inconsistent watering often leads to smaller, less juicy apples and can stress the tree, making it more susceptible to pests.

Pruning Tips

Idared apples bloom on wood that is two years or older, so avoid heavy pruning that removes all your fruiting spurs. The best time to prune is late winter while the tree is dormant to shape the canopy into an "open center" or "central leader" style, which improves airflow and sun penetration. Think of it like thinning out a crowded room; removing crossing or dead branches allows the remaining limbs to focus energy on producing larger, healthier fruit.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer in early spring before the buds break to support the upcoming season's growth. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers in late summer or fall because this encourages tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost, leading to winter kill. If your tree is growing more than 12 inches per year, you can skip the fertilizer entirely to prevent excessive leafy growth at the expense of fruit.
