Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Your Cameo Apple tree needs a minimum of six to eight hours of full sunlight daily to produce crisp, red-striped fruit. While it can survive in partial shade, you will notice a significant drop in fruit sweetness and the apples will struggle to develop their signature coloring.
  • Soil: Aim for deep, well-drained loamy soil that allows roots to breathe. If you are dealing with heavy clay, plant your tree in a raised mound to prevent "wet feet" and root rot, or incorporate organic compost to improve the structure of sandy soils.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide about ten gallons of water once a week to help the root system settle into its new home. Once mature, the Cameo is relatively self-sufficient but requires deep soaking during dry spells to prevent the fruit from dropping early or becoming shriveled. Inconsistent watering during the heat of summer often leads to smaller, less juicy apples and can stress the tree's overall immune system.

Pruning Tips

This tree produces fruit on "old wood," specifically on short branches called spurs that develop over several years. You should prune in late winter while the tree is dormant, removing any vertical "water sprouts" and thinning the center to let light reach the inner branches. Think of it like opening a window; better airflow and sunlight penetration ensure the fruit ripens evenly and reduces the risk of fungal diseases.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fruit tree fertilizer in early spring just as the buds begin to swell. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, leafy growth that won't harden off in time for winter and is easily damaged by the first freeze.

#ProPlantTips For Care

One of the easiest to grow apples, Cameo is hardy in growing zones 4-8, giving them excellent cold and heat tolerance. A chance seedling that is a cross between the classic Red Delicious and Golden Delicious Apple trees.

All Apples need full sun for the best crops, especially the morning sun to dry the dew from the foliage.

Plant in organically rich soil that is well-drained for best results. A good layer of mulch over the root system keeps them cool, moist and insulated!

Requiring consistent access to moisture, be sure to set up a regular watering cycle to protect your investment and have the juiciest crop.

Prune when dormant in late winter to open the canopy and provide air circulation. You can also train your tree smaller or into Espalier for a custom-sized tree for your needs!

Cameo apples are hard to find in grocery stores. These trees never stay in stock long. Buy yours today and have your own fresh-off-the-tree healthy fruit for you and your family!
