How to Use Crunch-A-Bunch™ Apple Tree in the Landscape

This great-tasting cultivar has been called an improved version of Goldrush Apple. Use a group of 2 or 3 different Apple varieties to cross-pollinate each other.

Use a high-density planting plan for backyard orchards, or plant them in a row 20 feet on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

Keep them tightly pruned for size control, or allow them to spread. You’ll love the spring blooms, and the lovely, yummy fruit display.

Plant Apples along the backside of your perennial or mixed shrub border. Participate in the Edible Landscape trend and work them in to a grouping to screen off the home behind yours.

You can even plant two different Apple varieties in the same hole. Use a pollination partner like Goldrush or Sweet Sixteen for pollination. It will grow to become a remarkable specimen plant.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Plant your tree in full sun. It requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

Well-drained soil is best. If you have poor drainage, build a raised bed to plant it.

Apples, and other fruiting trees, love good air circulation to help keep them clean and disease free. Don’t plant them too close to structures.

This easy-care cultivar grows well, even in the Midwest. It has been developed to have lower spray requirements.

Prune in late winter, before the new growth begins. The goals are to open up the canopy to sunlight and air flow.

Crunch-A-Bunch is a crisp, productive Apple selection with good disease resistance and unique flavor that is perfect for the home landscape. Order today!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the planting zone requirements for growing Crunch-A-Bunch apples successfully?

  • Crunch-A-Bunch apples thrive in USDA zones 4-8, making them suitable for most temperate climates. This cold-hardy variety was specifically developed to handle late spring frosts that can damage other apple trees. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil for best fruit production and disease resistance.

What type of soil and light conditions does the Crunch-A-Bunch apple tree need?

  • Crunch-A-Bunch apple trees thrive in full sun and well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Like most apples, they need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal fruit production. Plant in fertile, loamy soil that doesn't stay waterlogged to prevent root rot.

How do I care for a newly planted Crunch-A-Bunch apple tree, including watering and fertilizing?

  • Water deeply once weekly during the first growing season, providing 1-2 inches including rainfall. Apply balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring before bud break. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch 3 inches from the trunk.

Is the Crunch-A-Bunch apple tree self-fertile, or do I need multiple trees for pollination?

  • Crunch-A-Bunch apple trees are not self-fertile and require cross-pollination from another apple variety. Like most apple trees, you'll need at least two different cultivars blooming at the same time for fruit production. Plant another mid-season blooming variety nearby for best results.

When does the Crunch-A-Bunch apple ripen, and how long does it store?

  • Crunch-A-Bunch apples ripen in mid-September and store exceptionally well for up to 8 months in refrigeration. This early-mid season variety was specifically developed to beat late frosts while delivering long-term storage capability. Plan your harvest for September and enjoy fresh apples well into the following summer. Shop at Nature Hills for this limited-supply variety.

Will Crunch-A-Bunch apples grow well in my zone 5-8 climate, and how cold hardy are they?

  • Crunch-A-Bunch apples are well-suited for zones 5-8 and show good cold hardiness as an early mid-season variety that ripens in mid-September. This cultivar was specifically developed by MAIA to beat late season frosts. Plant in full sun with good drainage for best results.

What pruning is required for the Crunch-A-Bunch apple tree to maintain size and productivity?

  • Prune Crunch-A-Bunch apple trees in late winter while dormant to maintain shape and encourage productive fruiting spurs. Remove water sprouts, crossing branches, and dead wood annually. Since this variety is highly productive with excellent fruit set, thin crowded branches to prevent breakage and improve air circulation.
