How to Use Chojuro Pears in the Landscape

These dwarf trees can fit just about anywhere! Try them near the entrance of your outdoor kitchen for a quaint, little accent tree.

Or, add to a postage stamp-sized backyard orchard. It’s so easy to keep fruit trees pruned to any size. All you need to do is spend a few minutes in summer tip pruning back to the height you want.

Create a hedgerow by planting 7 feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Plant Asian Pears in full sun for best results. You will also want a spot that has good air circulation. No low-lying, frost-trapping planting sites for Pears, please!

They need well-drained soil. If you see puddles that remain long after a rainfall, you’ll need to improve your drainage.

That’s as easy as bringing in additional soil and heaping it up into a mound. It should be 18 inches tall and 3 feet wide. Or, plant in a raised bed, if you prefer a more formal look.

Mulch your Chojuro Pear with a layer that is 3 inches thick. Spread it out to 3 feet past the canopy. Please don’t have the mulch touch the trunk, pull it back several inches all around the trunk.

Give a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Drip irrigation is best, so the leaves remain dry.

There won’t be much need to prune this dwarf tree for size, but you can remove crossing or broken branches just about any time.

Thin the fruit by removing blooms and early-developing fruit at the start of the summer. You’ll be glad you did, as the mature harvest will be much larger in size.
