Love the crisp, juicy taste of Asian Pears? Add a Chojuro Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Chojuro’) for a wonderful harvest of very tasty fruit. The sweet crunch has just a hint of yummy butterscotch flavor in this heirloom variety.

This variety is very productive, and reliably sets fruit for you year after year. It’s a snap to care for, as this dwarf stays manageable in size. The mature fruit even hangs for a long time on the tree, so you can harvest over the course of several weeks.

Watch for the skin to turn golden-brown with a russet overlay. You’ll know they are getting ripe. Don’t let the birds peck at too many of them, before you go out and harvest your share. It’s always a race with the birds, isn’t it?

Chojuro Pear trees have a great look, as well. The summer foliage is lush and luxurious. You’ll be pleased to have the privacy screening!

In fall, the foliage deepens to an outstanding red. This variety can truly be called an “ornamental edible.”

You’ll enjoy the graceful spread of the branches, and the slightly flattened pears that develop in abundance all through the canopy. Pair it with another Asian Pear or Bartlett Pear as a pollination partner. You’ll enjoy a huge harvest in a few years.

Chojuro Pears are medium to large-sized, and they are packed with juice. They’ll be heavy!

Fair warning, you’ll want to thin the fruit set early in the season. This will help ensure the mature fruit reaches a good size, without breaking the branch.

Once harvest is done, and you’ve had your fill of the tree-ripe fruit, store it for months and months! Chojuro is an excellent keeper.

For a marvelous taste, and a great value - you really can’t go wrong with healthy, sweet-tasting, juicy-as-all-get-out Chojuro Asian Pears. Order yours from the expert growers at Nature Hills today!

How to Use Chojuro Pears in the Landscape

These dwarf trees can fit just about anywhere! Try them near the entrance of your outdoor kitchen for a quaint, little accent tree.

Or, add to a postage stamp-sized backyard orchard. It’s so easy to keep fruit trees pruned to any size. All you need to do is spend a few minutes in summer tip pruning back to the height you want.

Try them in a high-density planting with other varieties. Nature Hills offers several high-quality Asian Pears. It’s hard to decide which variety is your favorite, so order several as pollination partners.

Create a hedgerow by planting 7 feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Plant Asian Pears in full sun for best results. You will also want a spot that has good air circulation. No low-lying, frost-trapping planting sites for Pears, please!

They need well-drained soil. If you see puddles that remain long after a rainfall, you’ll need to improve your drainage.

That’s as easy as bringing in additional soil and heaping it up into a mound. It should be 18 inches tall and 3 feet wide. Or, plant in a raised bed, if you prefer a more formal look.

Mulch your Chojuro Pear with a layer that is 3 inches thick. Spread it out to 3 feet past the canopy. Please don’t have the mulch touch the trunk, pull it back several inches all around the trunk.

Give a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Drip irrigation is best, so the leaves remain dry.

There won’t be much need to prune this dwarf tree for size, but you can remove crossing or broken branches just about any time.

Thin the fruit by removing blooms and early-developing fruit at the start of the summer. You’ll be glad you did, as the mature harvest will be much larger in size.

Watch our YouTube videos and read the Garden Blog. You’ll get plenty of great advice on caring for fruit trees.

Chojuro fruit has a fantastic flavor. You’ll enjoy lovely white blooms in spring. The foliage has a great, red fall color. What are you waiting for? Order today!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water does the Chojuro Pear Tree require weekly?

  • Chojuro Pear trees need about 1 inch of water weekly during growing season. Deep, infrequent watering works best to establish strong roots. Water more frequently during fruit development and hot spells, but reduce watering as harvest approaches in late summer.

What fertilizer is best for the Chojuro Pear Tree, and when to apply it?

  • Use a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer in early spring before bud break for best fruit production. Apply again after harvest to support next year's growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that promote excessive foliage over fruit development.

When does the Chojuro Pear Tree bloom and when is the fruit ready to harvest?

  • Chojuro Pear trees bloom with beautiful white flowers in spring and produce mid-season fruit ready for harvest when the skin turns golden-tan with russet overlay. The fruit hangs well on the tree, allowing you to harvest over several weeks for maximum convenience.

Is the dwarf Chojuro Pear Tree available as bare root, and how is it shipped?

  • The dwarf Chojuro Pear Tree is typically available as bare root during the dormant season for optimal transplant success. Bare root trees ship in late winter to early spring when the tree is dormant. Plant immediately upon arrival or heel in temporarily if soil conditions aren't ready.

Can the Chojuro Pear Tree grow in clay soil?

  • Chojuro Pear Trees can tolerate clay soil but prefer well-draining conditions for optimal growth. Clay tends to retain water, which can stress the roots and reduce fruit production. Improve drainage by amending with compost or planting on a slight slope when you shop at Nature Hills.
