Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Haralson Apple Tree in a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun ensures the best fruit production and helps prevent fungal diseases by drying the leaves quickly after rain.
  • Soil: This tree thrives in well-drained soil that holds moisture but doesn't stay soggy. If you have heavy clay or very sandy soil, amend the planting site with organic matter like compost to improve drainage and nutrient retention.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your young tree weekly, providing about 10-15 gallons to encourage deep root establishment. Once established, Haralson apples are moderately drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture during dry spells is crucial for preventing fruit drop and ensuring juicy, full-sized apples.

Pruning Tips

Prune your Haralson apple tree in late winter while it is still dormant, before buds break. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches to open up the canopy for better air circulation and sunlight penetration, which directly improves fruit quality.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced fertilizer or a fruit-tree specific formula in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid fertilizing late in the summer, as this can stimulate tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before winter, leaving the tree vulnerable to cold damage.

The Haralson Apple Tree (Malus x 'Haralson') has been pleasing apple aficionados for nearly a century! Introduced in 1922, this reliable smaller tree form bears large crops without taking up excessive space.

This prestigious fruit tree is extremely cold hardy with a short growing season, so you can enjoy fresh apples in colder climates.

The profusion of white blossoms arrives late in spring (after any threat of frost) making them ideal for northern gardeners and areas prone to late frosts. Pollinators and hummingbirds are grateful for the nectar resource!

The greenish-yellow apples are delightfully round and ripen to medium-sized red fruit, spattered with kisses of golden yellow and charming green freckles.

You'll love when this biennial bearing produces. The Haralson's short stature offers a striking tree form and produces ample crops to please any apple lover.

These are juicy and ideal for cider, baking, or eating fresh. With very firm white flesh featuring a complex, tart flavor, you'll love slicing one fresh and using it in your salads and cheese trays. This is also an excellent apple for baked goods and pies because it holds its shape!

Haralson requires a pollinating partner. Luckily it does well with the most popular apple cultivars on the market: the Gala, Honeycrisp, Red Delicious!

How to Use Haralson Apple Tree In The Landscape

Not all home gardeners have acres available for personal orchards. The Haralson is ideal for those that want delicious apples but cannot commit more yard than they have to spare.

Gain larger yields with a pollinator partner, plus you can even plant the Haralson in the same hole with its buddy to save space! Read about it here in our Blog.

Plant as a backdrop to your vegetable garden or as a picnic destination at the back of your yard. Anchor cottage and perennial gardens with these charming trees.

Accents and specimens, front yard gardening, edible landscaping and dual-purpose gardening all benefit from their size and beauty.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Apple trees require full sun. Provide a protected location and plant in rich, organically fertile, well-drained soil.

Consistent watering during drought is key. A layer of mulch will insulate the roots and hold moisture in better as well.

Prune in winter for good air circulation and aim for full sun for best performance. Apple scab resistant!

Very cold hardy and requiring about 1000 chill hours, these are perfect trees for climates in growing zones 3-6. Developed in the fruit breeding program at the University of Minnesota, so you know they’re cold tolerant!
