Beautiful, reliable, and adaptable to many environments, it's no wonder the Capital Flowering Pear Tree (Pyrus calleryana 'Capital') has been a favorite of landscapers for years! In fact, they are so popular that you're likely to see a couple on a walk around the block. The attractive features of this tree are evident and make it the perfect urban and suburban tree!
Native to China and Taiwan, this upright-branched deciduous tree grows in a pyramidal shape and sprouts luscious green leaves each spring. The foliage creates a beautiful underlay for the magnificent white-petaled blossoms that grow outwards from a buttery yellow center!
As an upright-branched ornamental tree, Capital tends to grow in a fairly columnar fashion with branches reaching more upwards than straight out. While it does grow small greenish-yellow fruits, they are not optimal for us to eat, making the tree more ornamental than anything. However, birds love the fruit and will visit often for a tasty snack.
Birds aren't the only visitors you'll see. Aside from awe-struck neighbors walking by, pollinators, butterflies, and hummingbirds will also frequent during the bloom season for a chance at the nectar of those cream and white blossoms! Capital isn't done showing off once spring and summer are finished. Once fall arrives in full force this beauty's leaves turn a stunning bronze-red for a third season of interest!
Planting and Application:
Capital Flowering Pear can be used in a number of ways in a landscape! They make excellent street-side trees or in line for a privacy screen. Its narrow shape allows it to be planted in areas that may not have the width for an outward-branching tree.
Plant a single specimen by itself for an asymmetrical elegance, or as a pair on either side of a driveway to greet arriving guests! Anchor your foundation planting or highlight a front garden berm with these sky-reaching blooming trees!
Create an allée around your seating areas or around the porch or patio for pinpoint shade and spring blooms! March a row of Capital Pears, spaced with military precision along a path! Or to define your landscape's borders or as a backdrop to garden beds in the sun!
- Wonderful Creamy White Blossoms
- Charming Columnar Shape!
- Adaptable to Urban Areas
- Attracts Pollinators

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This specimen appreciated being planted somewhere it can bask in the sun all day long. It also does best in well-drained soils and tolerates some drought once it's established. Provide new trees with regular watering and a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to hold moisture and insulate the root system from heat and cold throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9. The Capital Pear Tree is generally an easy tree to take care of as long as it is pruned a bit each winter or very early spring.
This tree is not available in all areas. Simply enter your zip code in our Growing Zone Finder on the page to see if you can purchase this gorgeous, desirable tree! In some locations, birds help spread the seeds and these seedlings do a little too well where they fall. Nature Hills guarantees your environment's safety by using Plant Sentry™ to ensure we are adhering to all State and Federal Agricultural laws and regulations.
