Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

The National Audubon Society presents a new line of native plants and trees that will help birds and wildlife thrive in your area! The story of the Audubon® Native Black Walnut Tree (Juglans nigra) like many native trees, is a fascinating one! Long used for homes and furniture, the once prominent forest member has been reduced to a fraction of its former population.

You and your family can enjoy the open, airy, dappled shade of the feathery, alternate compound leaves. Casting dense cooling relief from the sun, your birds and wildlife enjoy this tree as well! Unique spring green catkins pollinate the insignificant female flowers, quickly turning into the iconic green hulled nuts you and your squirrels will be eyeing hungrily!

Plant in groups to create the largest wildlife habitat! In a few years, you’ll be collecting bushels of delicious Walnuts that store well once cured. You’ll support large populations of birds, both local and migratory as they seek out insects and nuts to eat!

Planting and Application:

Eastern Black Walnuts are rich in flavor and are high in protein, you’ll have wildlife knocking down your door to feast! Birds flock to these mighty natives as they host over 100 species of insects that feed birds and their chicks! The broad limbs serve as safe haven for them to roost and nest.

Create an incredible focal point for your landscape with these mighty legacy trees and serve as lasting memorial plantings. Planted in the open without competitors, the Eastern Black Walnut keeps its lower limbs. It spreads wide to create a picturesque large specimen with a beautiful, wide-spreading canopy. It’s sure to make a bold statement!

  • Squirrels & Wildlife
  • Feeds Cardinals, Chickadees, Titmice, Nuthatches, Jays & Woodpeckers
  • Caterpillar Host Plant - Feeds Birds & Chicks
  • Gorgeous, Large Shade Tree
  • Native Apex Wildlife Tree

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Walnut Trees are hardy in USDA zones 4-9 and love the full sun! You’ll rarely worry about weeds because the juglone produced by the roots kills most competition. Their large size has an equally large root system to support them so Proper Placement is Key!

  • Full Sun & Adaptable Soil Requirements
  • Well-Drained Rich Soil
  • Mulch Well & Provide Moderate Water
  • Prune Late Winter
  • Harvest in September - October

A mighty bird-friendly tree, the Audubon® Native Black Walnut Tree will leave a lasting impression on everyone within sight of its majestic presence! Give the gift of a legacy by ordering your own at NatureHills.com!
