Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give your Sunrita® Burgundy at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily. Full sun is essential for that deep wine-red color and to keep the plant from getting "leggy" or floppy as it reaches for the light.
  • Soil: These plants thrive in "lean" or average soil that drains quickly. If you have heavy clay, plant them in a raised bed or incorporate some fine gravel to ensure the roots never sit in soggy ground, which can cause them to rot over winter.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once established, this Blanket Flower is quite drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering or keeping the soil constantly saturated, as this leads to fewer flowers and weak stems.

Pruning Tips

Sunrita® Burgundy blooms on new wood, so you should deadhead spent flowers throughout the summer to encourage a constant supply of fresh buds. In early spring, cut the entire plant back to about 3 inches above the ground to make room for vigorous new growth. Think of this like a "reset button" that keeps the mound tight and prevents the center from becoming sparse or woody.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a light application of a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as new growth appears. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this forces soft, lush growth that won't be hardy enough to survive the first hard frost. Since Blanket Flowers actually prefer lower fertility, a single application in spring is usually all they need for the entire year.

Glamorous dark cherry-red blooms, the Sunrita® Burgundy Blanket Flower (Gaillardia aristata 'Burgundy') is a very colorful summer-to-fall blooming perennial that beneficial pollinators adore! The toothy petals of these saturated blooms stand out from a darker burgundy fuzzy center with a pollen-filled yellow eye in the very middle of each bloom! Held aloft on long, slender stems above a mound of green foliage.

Burgundy grows into a neat and tidy mound just a foot tall and wide, creating darling clumps of greenery smothered in these bright daisy-like blossoms! These are highly-adaptable perennials that add lively color to bouquets, gardens large and small, as well as summer pots and planters! The blooms start in late spring and keep popping up until early fall, and attract swarms of nectar-hungry bees and butterflies and also plenty of pollen for beneficial pollinators!

Sunrita® Blanket Flowers are an improved version of Gaillardia that remains neat and compact while profusely reblooming all growing season long! The native wildflower cousins of Gaillardia can be found throughout North and South America and are named after an 18th-century French patron of botany - M. Gaillard de Charentonneau. Cold and heat-resistant in USDA hardiness zones 4 - 9, there is little these tough herbaceous perennials can't handle in your landscape!

Planting and Application:

Gaillardia adds a saturated blast of color to the edges of sunny garden beds or cut flower borders and your indoor floral arrangements! That bright red hue and smaller, space-saving size means intense color for porch and patio planters, and mixed front porch containers for stunning blooms without the fuss!

Perennial beds gain vivid red hues all summer long until frost! Plant with ornamental grasses, other sunny perennials, and around red or purple flowering shrubs for incredible color! Perfect for mixing with Coneflower, Coreopsis, Asters, and Sedum for late-season blooms that doesn't stop all growing seasons! You'll turn any garden into a pollinator garden or updated modern wildflower planting with these long-blooming, nectar, and pollen-rich flowering plants!

Burgundy Blanket Flowers love dry sunny locations and are drought-tolerant once established, so their ideal for cheerful color in Rock gardens, and as edging along the fronts of garden beds and borders, dotted along sunny pathways, and watch them thrive in that 'hell-strip' between the sidewalk and road! You'll love the radiant blooms cheerfully blooming along the side of your driveway! Try pairing Sunrita® Burgundy with its big sister Burgundy Gaillardia for a tiered planting of varying heights!

  • Bold Saturated Toothy Cherry Red Petals
  • Green Mounded Perennials & Slender Stems
  • Non-Stop Reblooming Late Spring Through Fall
  • Very Low Maintenance & Vigorous Compact Growth
  • Containers, Bed & Border Edging, Cut-Flowers, Xeric Focal Points

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Perennial Gaillardia grows vigorously in average fertility and almost any type of well-drained soil, doing the best in full sun. It tolerates some dry soils once established, but it does not do well in heavy clay soils. Preferring regular moisture but can become very drought resistant. Gaillardia self-sows, so deadhead after the blooms fade is recommended (unless you don't mind them spreading themselves about the garden), and to encourage new blooms in profusion! Prune back in late fall once the foliage begins to yellow.

  • Vigorous in Full Sun
  • Low to Average Soil Moisture
  • Well-Drained Average Soil
  • Deadhead to Prevent Reseed & Encourage More Blooms
  • Prune Back Late Fall

The bright and cheerful cherry-red Sunrita® Burgundy Blanket Flower is a fantastic extended-bloom perennial that lends easy-care color to sunny gardens, as well as ample nectar and pollen for local pollinators! Order now from the perennial experts at NatureHills.com!
