Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun for the best color intensity. In hotter regions, aim for morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent the vibrant red leaves from bleaching or scorching.
  • Soil: These plants need rich, well-drained soil to thrive. If you have heavy clay that holds water, plant them in a raised bed or a slight mound to keep the crown of the plant from sitting in moisture and rotting.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water twice a week to ensure the root system establishes deeply. While mature Coral Bells are quite drought tolerant, keeping the soil consistently moist during heat waves prevents the leaf edges from becoming crispy and brown. Think of consistent moisture as the key to keeping the foliage looking lush and polished all season long.

Pruning Tips

Pruning this perennial is more like a spring cleaning than a heavy haircut. In late winter or early spring, simply snip away any tattered, brown, or winter-damaged leaves to make room for fresh new growth. Do not cut into the woody crown at the base of the plant because this central hub is where all new leaves and flower spikes originate.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in early spring just as you see new leaves begin to peek out. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer season. Excess nitrogen late in the year encourages soft, tender growth that cannot harden off in time for winter, leaving the plant vulnerable to frost damage.

Fulfill your landscaping dreams this season with this vivid selection of native Heuchera. Clear, dark red foliage looks incredible all season long! Wide-spreading Northern Exposure™ Red Heuchera (Heuchera x 'TNHEUNER') hugs the ground. It fills in around other perennials and shrubs and adds pizzazz no matter where you place it.

In summer, slender red wands rise above the dense, medium-sized mounds of red foliage. Clusters of tiny yellow flowers cling to these scapes and make a showy, see-through display. Don't bother trying to count the butterflies that will visit to gather their nectar. You'd have better luck counting the stars in the sky! Gorgeous in bouquets, these bell-shaped blossoms are clustered along these scapes are bell-shaped, yellow blooms. There won't be a moment when Hummingbirds don't come around, seeking nectar.

Growing 14 inches in height when in bloom, these mounding clumps spread around 20 inches in width. Highly adaptable and semi-evergreen in the warmer of its favored USDA growing zones 3 - 10 and is an ornamental herbaceous perennial in colder climates. No matter where you plant it, this long-lived herbaceous perennial handles it all! Often evergreen to semi-evergreen in warmer climates and mild winters, these are heat and humidity-resistant and highly adaptable low-growing plants!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

The mounded Perennial has foliage that gleams in full shade and shines in full sunshine too, plus everything in between! Nothing could be easier! Make sure they get consistent water, and carefully pull the winter-dried leaves off in springtime. When planting, take care not to dig them in too deep, keep the upper inch of nursery soil showing above ground. We do recommend well-drained soil and Nature Hills Root Booster during planting time. The symbiotic ingredients make a world of difference over the entire life of these beautiful ground-hugging accent plants.

Add a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around to cover the root system. Then, scoot the mulch back away from directly touching the crown. Grow Northern Exposure™ Coral Bells across most of the United States. It's wildy cold-hardy and heat tolerant, and deer simply choose not to bother with them.
