Where to Plant

Sunlight: This evergreen thrives in full sun, needing at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily to maintain its tight, twisted growth habit. While it can tolerate some afternoon shade, too little sun will cause the unique "Hollywood" foliage to become sparse and lose its signature artistic shape.
Soil: It prefers well drained soil and is highly adaptable to various types, though it hates "wet feet." For heavy clay, plant in a slight mound to improve drainage; for sandy soil, mix in some organic compost to help hold just enough moisture for the roots.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Hollywood Juniper twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once established, this shrub is remarkably drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during extreme heat waves or prolonged dry spells. If the soil remains bone dry for too long, you may notice the vibrant green needles turning a dull bronze color as a sign of stress.

Pruning Tips

Since these shrubs are prized for their naturally wind-swept look, pruning should be kept to a minimum and done in early spring before new growth starts. This variety technically blooms on old wood, but because the flowers are inconspicuous, your main goal is simply thinning out dead branches or shaping wayward limbs to highlight the spiral form. Think of it like a light grooming rather than a heavy haircut; you want to preserve the natural character rather than shearing it into a formal box.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release evergreen fertilizer in early spring just as the tips begin to brighten with new growth. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall because this can stimulate tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first freeze. This late season growth is easily damaged by winter burn, which can leave unsightly brown patches on your beautiful specimen.

Plant in full sun or partial shade with at least four hours of sunlight a day. Water consistently during the first season to get the plants established, and then only in extended dry weather and in late fall to protect against winter damage. Hollywood Juniper requires well-drained soil to stay healthy. If you need to improve drainage, please add extra dirt in a planting mound to raise up the root system of your plant.

Prune in early spring to remove broken branches. Make a pruning plan before you start, and consider the overall shape of your plant to avoid taking too much off in any given year. Fertilize with a formula for evergreens in early spring. Please follow the application rates and timing listed on the label.

Growing in coastal conditions, controlling erosion, and pollution resistance, and easily handling drought, Juniper trees are seldom bothered by deer and rabbits.
