Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Happy Face® Pink Paradise Potentilla in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate partial shade, full sun is essential for the most vibrant pink blooms and a dense, compact growth habit; too much shade will result in leggy growth and fewer flowers.
  • Soil: This shrub adapts well to a variety of soil types, including poor or rocky soils, as long as they drain well. If you have heavy clay that holds water, amend the planting area with compost to improve drainage, or consider planting in a raised bed to prevent root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply once or twice a week to help the root system establish, checking the soil moisture regularly. Once established, Potentilla is quite drought-tolerant, but consistent watering during dry spells will keep the foliage lush and encourage continuous blooming throughout the summer.

Pruning Tips

Happy Face® Pink Paradise blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. You can simply shear the plant back by about one-third to maintain its tidy, rounded shape and stimulate vigorous new stems that will produce plenty of flowers for the coming season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release, balanced shrub fertilizer in early spring as new growth starts to emerge. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the growing season, as this can push soft new growth that won't have time to harden off before winter, leaving the plant vulnerable to cold damage.

Cheerful blooms, the Happy Face® Pink Paradise Potentilla (Potentilla fruticosa HAPPY FACE 'Kupinpa'), is a deciduous shrub with ornamental features. Potentilla has always been a popular plant among gardeners, and is are highly ornamental shrub that is hardy, tidy, and carefree.

Your Happy Face® Pink Paradise provides all the familiar features of a hardy Potentilla but adds the additional appeal of lively, pink flowers that hold their color far longer than the other pinks. The delicate, ¾-inch blossoms are semi-double and will blanket the green foliage from June through August!

Pollinators galore will arrive to sip nectar and carry away the rich pollen! Happy Face® Pink Paradise Potentilla has a mounded habit and compact nature and is cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 7. Happy Face® Potentilla becomes the workhorse of your landscape! Growing just 2-3 feet in height and width, these are wonderfully space-saving deciduous ornamentals!

Planting and Application:

You'll love having these small pink-flowering shrubs to brighten up your landscape! Use at the front of a mixed garden bed and as edging or facer plants.
