Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the richest plum color and the most abundant blooms, site your Dianthus where it will receive a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate afternoon partial shade, you will find that bloom production is reduced, and the intense flower color will be noticeably paler.
  • Soil: This plant requires sharp drainage, so aim for a light, loamy, or even slightly sandy soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline. If your native soil is heavy clay, blend in a generous amount of coarse sand or fine gravel and compost before planting, as wet, "mucky" roots are the quickest way to lose your plant.

Watering Requirements

During the first season, water your new Dianthus thoroughly once a week, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry completely before you water again to help establish a deep root system. Once mature, this variety is quite drought-tolerant, but letting it go too dry for too long will cause overall stress and result in significantly smaller and less vibrant blooms. Always water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry, which prevents common fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

The EverBloom™ Plum Glory Dianthus flowers on new wood and requires a light shearing to maintain its continuous bloom cycle. After the main flush of spring and early summer blooms begins to fade, take your garden shears and trim the entire plant back by about one-third. Think of this as a quick haircut; this technique removes spent flowers and encourages the plant to immediately redirect energy into pushing out fresh, new stems and flowers throughout the rest of the season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a light application of a balanced, granular slow-release fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10, in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge. Alternatively, you can use a liquid fertilizer monthly at half strength during the peak blooming period from spring into mid-summer. What you must avoid is a heavy dose of high-nitrogen fertilizer after the middle of summer, as this late-season growth will be soft and vulnerable to damage from early cold weather.

Gorgeous Garden Pinks, the EverBloom™ Plum Glory Dianthus (Dianthus x 'G18146') are scented, vibrant members of the Carnation family! These are smothered in a domed mound of bright pink blooms, each with a plum circle around the eye of each flower! Fringed petals and gorgeous wide-open flowers atop slender stems.

The compact, blue-green frosted round clumps and small slender, pointed leaves are almost continuously covered in pink and plum, scented flowers from May until October in many areas. Garden Pinks delight you with pollinators and Hummingbirds! Plus they are adorable cut flower stems for nosegays and bud vases!

EverBloom™ Dianthus have a near-continuous bloom time! Compact perennials throughout USDA growing zones 4- 9, and can be evergreen to semi-evergreen in mild winter climates! Low-growing accents, these Dianthus only reach 6-8 inches when in bloom and spread politely to an 18-24 inch domed mound.

Planting and Application:

Garden Pinks are also delightful in mixed or massed containers on your porch, patio, and around a sunny deck! These space-saving accents are perfect for Xeriscaping, thrive in Rock gardens, and look lovely as sunny edging along paths and walkways. Use in your crevice gardens and rock walls, soften the tops of retaining walls, or use as facer plants and front of the garden borders.

Plum Glory Garen Pinks are traditional cottage and perennial garden focal points, grouping plants, and lovely edging! En masse, they act as low-growing groundcover and flowering living mulch anywhere in the sun garden!

  • Blue-Green Foliage
  • Low-Growing Mounded Form
  • Rock & Crevice Gardens, Containers, Edging & Groundcover

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Dianthus, aka Garden Pinks, need full sun and sharply drained soils to do their best. Provide enough water to establish, and then only supplemental moisture in extreme conditions. A 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch helps in the hottest climates and coldest winters by adding insulation. Deadhead after blooms fade, and prune mounds in late winter or early spring to clean the mounds of dead foliage.

  • Full Sun
  • Very Well-Drained Soils
  • Moderate to Low Moisture
  • Deadhead After Flowering & Prune Early Spring
  • Deer Resistant
