Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this peony at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the heaviest bloom set and strongest stems. While it can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates, too much shade will result in lush foliage but very few of those spectacular white and purple flowers.
  • Soil: These plants crave well-drained, fertile soil and absolutely hate having "wet feet" where water sits around the roots. If you are dealing with heavy clay, amend the soil with compost to improve drainage, or plant in a raised bed to ensure the crown stays healthy.

Watering Requirements

During the first season, check the soil moisture twice a week and water deeply to help the fleshy root system establish itself in your garden. Once established, Cora Louise is surprisingly drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during the spring bud formation can lead to smaller flowers or buds failing to open. A deep soak every week or two during summer dry spells will keep the foliage looking fresh until frost.

Pruning Tips

Because Itoh peonies are a hybrid between tree and herbaceous types, they die back to the ground in late autumn like a perennial. Wait until a hard frost has killed the foliage, then cut the stems back to about 4 to 6 inches above soil level. Remove and trash all foliage to prevent fungal diseases from overwintering near the crown.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a layer of compost around the base of the plant just as new red shoots emerge in the spring. Avoid high-nitrogen lawn fertilizers near your peonies, as this encourages rapid leafy growth at the expense of flower production.

Delicately Frills of Cora Louise Itoh Peony Are Romance Personified

  • Delicate Frills in Clear White and Burgundy
  • Strong Stems
  • Vigorous, Sturdy Plant
  • Delightfully Fragrant
  • Long-Lasting Cut Flowers

Add some romance to your garden this year with the heavenly blooms of Cora Louise Itoh Peony (Paeonia x 'Cora Louise'). This uniquely colored Peony is the result of a cross between woody tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa or P. suffruticosa x P. lutea or P. delavayi), and herbaceous Peony (P. lactiflora) It is part of a group of intersectional hybrids that is causing quite a stir.

Nearly transparent, clear white petals are delicate and ethereal. Each joins together in a burst of deep rosy-burgundy. The centers of each ruffled bloom are highlighted by a crown of golden anthers, creating a lovely glow from within!

Borne on sturdy stems and set off with a backdrop of deep green foliage, each bloom of Cora Louise Itoh Peony will stand tall in both sun or part shade!

Calling visitors of all kinds, you'll especially enjoy the flying flowers that will flock to your blooms each spring, lasting into summer!

Long-lasting blooms are perfect cut flowers for vase arrangements or bouquets, so remember to plant a few extra so you don't deprive your outdoor visitors!

Glossy-green foliage is strong and doesn't need staking except during strong weather. It creates the perfect backdrop for the fragrant blooms. The attractive foliage lasts right up until fall!

Preferring moist, rich soils, Cora Louise Itoh is nearly pest and disease-free!

The perfect partner for many other blooms. Beautiful in cutting and perennial gardens, and dreamy in the cottage gardens and borders. Drifts of these romantic beauties will stand alone as specimens, but also take your breath away when planted en masse.

Long-lived and very low care, these hardy plants can live for decades! Start your Peony collection and add some romance to your landscape with Cora Louise Itoh Peonies from Nature Hills today!
