Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer, or a specialty clematis fertilizer, early each spring just as new growth begins. Alternatively, you can feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month throughout the spring and early summer growing season. What to avoid: do not feed your clematis with high-nitrogen fertilizer late in the season, as this encourages soft vegetative growth that is easily damaged by early winter cold, instead of hardening off properly.
