Everyone loves the familiar Weeping Willow tree (Salix babylonica). Its graceful, ground-sweeping branches add so much movement to your landscape. Best known for its rounded, romantic appearance with long sweeping branches, the Weeping Willow has so much to offer. Spring comes early when you have a Weeping Willow; it's one of the first trees to leaf out early in the spring with incredibly fresh, bright green leaves. You will love its narrow, sage-green leaves swaying in the breeze through the summer.

The flexible weeping branches grow up and out, dramatically arching up, then growing down to trail on the ground. In the fall, you will be delighted by how its light greenish-golden-yellow leaves develop intense fall color, as well, transforming into golden yellow through the autumn. If you are lucky enough to live on the water, you have an excellent soil type for a Weeping Willow. They'll thrive when planted near a water source. The reflection of a willow tree in water is just as pretty as a picture.

The strong and flexible willow tree can be a wonderful reminder to work with life conditions, rather than fighting them. People often plant Weeping Willows to commemorate loved ones who have passed. Their beauty - and ability to survive in challenging conditions - can be a real helpmate during the rough first years of grief. Weeping Willow trees are a symbol of hope and growth, and they bring butterflies to your landscape.

Planting and Application:

The Weeping Willow tree loves water and is often planted near ponds to prevent erosion. You'll love the look of one or more planted at the edge of the lake or pond. Use several dotted here and there on either side of a river or stream for a natural, gorgeous look. Try one as an anchor tree in a new Rain Garden or runoff swale to catch rainwater in a low area.

It is also one of the fastest-growing shade trees, with a growth rate of 8-10 feet a year. Plant one to completely block out an ugly boathouse, or other unsightly views in just a few short years. The privacy it creates is airy and friendly. It will quickly reach its mature height and develop into one of your favorite plants. It is fast to establish, growing quickly to beautify an area in the quickest amount of time. Every lake property or waterfront home should have one.

Most people love using them as a specimen plant that is allowed to grow naturally. Let the branches hang to the ground in an area that does not need to be maintained beneath. Kids love sitting under the shady shelter of the branches. Keep your eye out for evidence of their "Forts" and "Clubhouses" under the canopy of the Weeping Willow tree. What a marvelous memory to gift your family!

  • #ProPlantTips for Care:

There is no such thing as too much water for a Weeping Willow tree. If you have a spot in your yard with moist, alkaline loamy, or clay soil that stays wet or collects water, the Weeping Willow will help dry it right up. Weeping Willows can adapt to drier soils as well. While it loves water, the Weeping Willow tree adapts well to many soil conditions and prefers moist soil, but it displays some drought tolerance. Not many trees can handle that extreme, from very wet to dry.

These large trees are often planted near lakes, rivers, or ponds to prevent the soil from eroding. Their surface-rooted, aggressive root systems will help to keep the soil in place. It's difficult for grass to grow under a Willow tree. Instead, consider simply using mulch beneath the tree. Then, let the branches hang down naturally and keep life simple for yourself.

Do not plant this tree near a septic system, septic tank, or drainage field, or near a pool, water main, or underground water sources. Give it space, and it will be a fine, picturesque tree for you. If you are interested in learning more information on invasive tree roots, click here for our blog!

Weeping Willow is one of the last to lose its leaves in the fall. If you grow it in a mulched area, you really won't even need to do any leaf cleanup. These fast-growing trees thrive in either full sun or partial shade, preferring at least 6 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Weeping Willow fast-growing?

Weeping Willow trees are very fast growing and will gain several feet of growth once established and in optimal condition.

Where should you plant a Weeping Willow?

Weeping Willow trees thrive in a wide range of soil types, moisture availability, and sun. Willows prefer moist, well-drained soil and have aggressive roots, so plant away from underground septic tanks or other underground water sources.

What is the difference between a Willow and a Weeping Willow?

Members of the Salix family of trees generally have an upright growth habit, while Weeping Willows have a cascading, drooping growth.

Are Weeping Willow Trees messy?

While the spring flowers or catkins drop, once these dry up they blow away or decompose quickly. In fall, when the fine-textured leaves drop, they too usually blow away and rarely need to be raked up because of how small they are.

I was skeptical - but it was worth it!

I ordered a bare root weeping willow, when it was shipped it looked like a pencil. Literally no thicker than a pencil but 4-5 feet long. I was shocked, but I planted it anyway. Within the first summer/fall the tree grew 7 feet! The little stick they sent never grew but the roots grew another lead over 7 feet in a year. So far it looks like it survived the winter. I would definitely recommend!!!

Hello TheDutchman,

Thank you so much for sharing your honest and encouraging experience with your bare root weeping willow! We completely understand how surprising it can be to receive such a slender, pencil-thin plant at first, but it’s fantastic to hear how wonderfully it took off and has grown over 7 feet in just one season. Your perseverance in planting it despite initial doubts truly paid off!

We’re glad your tree survived the winter, and your recommendation means a lot to us and future gardeners considering bare root specimens. For further success, be sure to keep an eye on watering as the tree establishes itself, especially during drier spells; mulching around the base can also help regulate soil moisture and temperature. If you ever want tips on pruning or troubleshooting, don’t hesitate to reach out! We’re here to help your willows—and your entire garden—flourish.

Wishing you happy planting,

My Willow Wedding gift was destroyed by an immature and irresponsible pet owner

I absolutely love the look and feel of the weeping willow tree. When my husband and I were married in late 2019 we decided that come spring we would buy 1 and plant it in remembrance of our wedding and love for one another. We decided to use this tree as a symbol for our relationship and we related the care, devotion, and attention one must pay to the tree ( especially in it’s early/young stages) as a reminder and guide for the same amount of care, devotion and attention you must put into a marriage in order to make it work. We looked long and hard for the perfect Willow to be our “ baby”, and finally found the perfect size and species at a nursery approx an hour away from our new home. Once we went and got our tree we were both very excited about the actual planting process in which we made a day of together, and watching this tree grow and become established was a regular and exciting pastime and hobby for us which also made sure we never forget to put forth the same amount of effort towards our own newly budding marriage. As this Spring was quickly approached, I of course checked on our tree at least 3 or more times a week, excited to see what the first new leaf buds were going to turn out to look like. I was thrilled the day I walked outside and saw this beautiful tree’s new leaves covering its long hanging branches, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment that all the pruning and fertilizing my husband and I had taken care to do to this tree had in fact finally paid off. My husband was equally excited and a bit boyish in his reaction to my announcement that our baby had not only gotten a whole new set of lush green leaves, but that it was also the very 1st tree in our yard to do so. We looked out our bedroom window several times a day for a little over a week so we could see how our tree had flourished. I think because of what this tree symbolized to us, being able to look at all it’s new growth and it’s healthy condition and color it reminded us that we not only managed to help this young tree to flourish but we had also nurtured and tended our new, young, and budding marriage. We got to feel good about not just 1 thing from looking at “Our” tree, but we got to feel good about several. Approx a week and a half after the Willow had finally gotten in all the new leaves it was going to have this season the unimaginable happened. Our “ selfish temporary” roommates allowed their new 6 month old Pitbull Dog puppy to completely chew off all the bottom branches and then start eating it’s trunk. On one of my “Normal” tree checks I noticed that some of the trees main lower branches had been what looked like gnawed off , and that whatever had done the damage had also been done to the trees trunk as the bark had been significantly removed only to reveal the very sensitive lighter color “tree marrow” that serves to not only feed but also to oxygenate the tree. It wasn’t but a week at most that the entire tree died and had to be dug up and discarded. I casually mentioned the issue to both the husband and the wife who bought the dog after moving in here even though they were quite aware from the very start we are NOT allowed to have dogs here. My husband usually has a cooler head than I do, so I left the issue of stressing the fact that they would most definitely be responsible for buying us a new tree , up to him. Sadly, I hate to report it is now the 2nd week of April and no one has made any effort whatsoever to make the situation right so I’m afraid this has now turned into a much larger issue than it was at the very beginning. I know if I had an animal and it destroyed someone else’s beloved property, I would have taken the person with me the day they told me what had happened to do my best to replace the tree. I now know that ai should have known that this wasn’t going to be remotely close to a normal, responsible solution as anyone who would ignore what the people who were nice enough to allow their hot mess of a set of people to move into their home told them about NO ANIMALS & then went and got one anyways, would have to inevitably have to be dealt with in a much different way. I am done with all that these people have brought into our home and as much as I hate to say it into my heart. I guess the moral of this story is you can’t fight a grease fire with water. In other words I am going to have to fight fire with fire and ignorance and selfishness with something damn near similar. I will report when I have gotten my tree ordered from your site. Wish me luck.
