Growing Zones 5-8
This dignified plant will certainly require a doubletake!
Unique tropical-looking sunny blooms, the showy Lutea Fritillaria (Fritillaria Imperialis 'Lutea') takes late spring ephemerals to a new level with their fantastic blooms that look like they belong in Hawai'i, not in USDA growing zones 5 to 8! These fragrant blooms look like nothing else you've seen in the typical spring garden!
Its fun and flamboyant appearance makes it a crown jewel for most gardeners! Featuring drooping clusters of bright yellow bells with pointed petals ring a tall, sturdy green stem. Like a green crown, each flower cluster is topped with a spikey ball of leaves rising over the blooms! The bulbs of Yellow Crown are dramatic focal points and thrillers in the landscape and the floral bouquet, you'll feel like you stepped out into a luau!
This plant doesn't just demand a closer inspection - it requires one! When the tall stalks shoot upward from the base of narrow, lance-shaped foliage, you'll know the party is about to start. Then, when its blooms begin to open, you'll find yourself wandering past and stopping to have a closer look at this alienesque creation.
Lutea Fritillaria, also known as Crown Imperials, are easy to grow and usually not bothered by deer, rodents, or Black Walnut juglone. Growing upward of 3 feet in height, the fast-growing stems rise above the green foliage clumps with a curious ring of green leaves skirting midway along the stems!
Planting and Application:
Lutea Fritillaria are must-haves for poolside and Rock Garden displays, as curiosities at the back of the garden border, or adding a tropical element to modern, architectural plantings. Best in rows and groupings, these Spring bulbs mingle with Agapanthus and Allium, each playing off their whimsical looks against each other beautifully! These bulbs naturalize and form little colonies throughout the landscape.
When you look like this, you have no choice but to stand out, which is why the Crown Imperial makes a superior accent plant. With its crown and downward-facing bell-shaped flowers, it may be true that the Crown Imperial looks down on other plants, but in this case, it's a good thing. It's also happy to shine as a background plant that reaches its impressive crown high above other plants. It's happy to shine with a tropical flair no matter where you plant it!
Tall and vertical elements, Lutea Imperials are dramatic thrillers in pots and planters around sunny porches, as unique architectural accents on front porches, or as unique features in mixed seating area planters that pollinators and children will be drawn to!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Fritillaria are easy-to-care-for perennial bulb plants! They must have well-drained soil and lots of sunshine all growing season but can handle partial sun in hotter growing zones. In colder zones, plant deeper and mulch well so they can survive the winter. Add bulb fertilizer to each hole for best results and provide moderate moisture during the growing season. Deer and rodent resistant, there are no pests or disease issues to worry about. In fact, their only issue is with soggy soil that will rot the bulbs. Deadhead once the flowers fade but keep the leaves to make food for the bulbs, then prune them back when the foliage yellows.
- Full Sun or Partial Shade
- Moderately Moist Well-Drained Soil
- Deadhead After Bloom, Prune to Ground When Leaves Yellow
- Very Cold & Heat Hardy
- Deer & Rodent Resistant
