The Variegated Calamondin Tree (Citrus mitis 'Variegata') produces fragrant waxy white blooms that are followed by tart, petite, orange fruit. But unlike its Calamondin cousin, the young fruit is green and creamy white striped like the unique leaves!

Fragrant flowers are typically appearing in the spring into summer, and fruit ripens for the holiday season. The fruit does hold well and is quite decorative! Container-grown plants may bloom seasonally and the plants are typically smaller than when grown in the landscape. These miniature orange-like fruits have a strong tart flavor that is often used in Thai cooking! Try your hand at creating some fantastically flavorful juice, unique flavored jams, and marmalades, or other culinary delights with these unique tropical fruits!

The entire tree is highly ornamental and is a lovely houseplant or patio plant! This immature fruit is strikingly green and yellow striped, and its variegated, clean handsome broadleaf evergreen foliage, has a compact habit, making it suitable for edible landscaping! Bees and butterflies enjoy the perfumed white blossoms, and you will too as they fragrance your space!

Outdoor hardy in growing zones 9 and up, you can bring them indoors for the winter if you live in a less-than-ideal environment. Easy-care and low maintenance, you'll enjoy loads of tiny fruit that are perfect for use in the place of lemons or limes. Create tasty fish and chicken dishes, or add them to cocktails and other refreshing beverages!

Planting and Application:

Dwarf Citrus are always a great privacy plant for year-round landscaping, anywhere you have some sun! Plant a mixture of Citrus close together for a varied and colorful, not to mention fragrant, hedgerow and shelterbelt that keeps nosy neighbors in check. Encloses your seating areas, yard or porches, and patios in year-round seclusion!

The springtime flowers are divine and the foliage delights all year long, and this tree can be pruned to any desired size and shape! Preferring full sun, keep small and place near a sunny window or under grow lights if you live in a colder climate! Simply plant the Variegated Calamondin in a container, and bring your tree indoors, and let the intoxicating Citrus scent brighten your home during the cold winter months.

  • Tart Striped Orange-Like Miniature Fruit
  • Compact For Indoors & Out
  • Fragrant White Blooms
  • Popular in Thai Cooking
  • Variegated Handsome Evergreen Glossy Foliage

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Citrus trees do need full sun, anything less and they just don't do well. Preferring morning sun to dry the leaves of dew, in a location with good air circulation. They also need very well-draining soil that is slightly acidic and fertile. Ensure containers have very good drainage and all plantings have moderate moisture access, preferring to dry out between waterings. Prune if needed after harvest, maintaining size, shape, and an open canopy for more airflow and sunlight penetration.

Protecting Container Citrus From Cold

If the temperatures in your area ever dip below that 40°F range or are prone to overnight frosts, then you need to be ready to protect your tree.

Although Citrus can grow year-round in warmer regions (zones 9 and 10), they can also thrive in colder areas (zones 4 to 7) as long as the tree is brought indoors prior to the first frost of winter.

In zone 8, you can cover your tree in the event of a cold snap or unexpected overnight freeze, or move a container plant inside for the night. In-ground Citrus must be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill, and not planted in a low area that collects cold air. If a spot like that is unavailable, or you are in a chill-prone climate, then you are safer planting Citrus Trees in a large, deep container with wheels to easily move them to a protected location or indoors when needed.

In cold growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors in the fall, or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside. Indoor plants need a bright indirect sun window, greenhouse, sunroom, or enclosed patio for the winter. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.
