Climbing Vines are a Landscape Designer's Secret

Vines Infographic

Climbing vines add privacy as well as an ornamental vertical dimension to any garden. They don't take up much floor space but work hard to define your landscape.

Vines hold their flowers, fruit and colorful fall color at eye level. This lets you appreciate these important design elements up close.

Cover and hide an unwelcome feature with vigorous flowering vines. Turn a tall trellis into an outdoor garden room with verdant walls.

Vines make a perfect privacy screen for small space gardens. They can also cover ground along the length of a tall slope.

These versatile plants have a multitude of uses in garden landscapes because of their many sizes and forms. Browse our collection of vines for sale, clicking on the image of each vine to review the specific Plant Highlights for each of our options.

Some vines scramble with ease up and over fences, arbors, and trellises. Others may need manmade assistance, such as a trellis or pergola.

Nature Hills Nursery offers sensational real vines that are climbers and runners. Runners may become climbers when they find some natural or manmade formation that they can climb.

Vine Plant Options Include Colorful Ivy and Virginia Creeper Vines

Both Ivy and Virginia Creeper vines are urban tolerant plants that are great for use in the city or on commercial properties. These large-scale Vines can cover five-story buildings within a few years, so use them in the right setting.

Ivy vines climb with twisting tendrils that are capped with adhesive discs. They are an excellent choice to cover brick and stone.

Blanket your rough walls with their classic Boston Ivy. The lustrous foliage is instantly recognizable by the tri-lobed leaves.

Ivy also works beautifully as a hard-working groundcover. You may have walked barefoot on real Ivy plants as they softly cover ground under tall trees.

You might not notice Ivy plants' white flowers. But your local butterflies certainly will.

Enjoy autumn, when outdoor Ivy plants turn a vivid scarlet for fall color. Large Ivy plants are gorgeous, with vines that attach to walls for a robust look.

Colorful Ivy is known as a fast-growing outdoor vine plant. Plant ivy along the top of slopes or retaining walls to drape down into a living green waterfall.

Do Ivy Vines Harm Brick Walls?

Vines on a brick Wall

The answer is: maybe. Ivy's strong aerial roots cling to mortar and brick, which is fine for a good, strong mortar mixture. But it may not be as fine for weaker or crumbling mortar. Always keep ivy trimmed back away from window frames.

Before using ivy, scrape the mortar joints to test their strength. If the mortar crumbles, train ivy to grow on a trellis structure placed a few inches away from your wall.

In the second year, select the best four shoots and train them to grow into a fan-shape. Next spring, cut back the new growth by a third to encourage it to start spreading out.

Vivid Fall Colors with Showy Climbing Vines

Fast-growing Engelman Virginia Creeper Ivy is another beautiful option. Use it to accent arbors and sturdy trellis systems.

Although it clambers like Ivy, Virginia Creeper is a different variety called Parthenocissus quinquefolia. It thrives in growing zones 3 through 9.

The botanical name refers to the five-lobed thick, leathery leaves. This vigorous choice turns an exceptionally remarkable burgundy red in fall, a color that’s sure to stop you in your tracks.

Rural properties can make use of Virginia Creeper vines as a groundcover to hide old TV towers. Let it climb as a permanent cover for deer stands and duck blinds.

Wildlife appreciates the purple berries. Their dense foliage makes a very effective screen.

Reimagine a classic with these widely adaptable vines. Go bold wherever you use Ivy and Virginia Creeper to create a standout garden feature.

With age, the base of the stems becomes woody trunks, adding an old world charm to your landscape. The expert growers at Nature Hills Nursery have even crafted a tree-form Chinese Blue Wisteria tree that makes an excellent specimen or focal point.

People do use Wisteria as a blanket to cover homes, too. The real vines happily twine along eyesores like fences and work hard to hide rock or concrete block piles.
